Hi. My wife (Sue) was diagnosed with bowel cancer in October, stage 4 due to a Krukenberg secondary in her ovaries. The plan is for her to have three cycles of chemotherapy to try and shrink the ovarian tumour prior to a bowel resection, removal of the ovarian mass and a full hysterectomy. Like everyone else in this situation we've been bombarded with new information and there's so much to take in. Obviously we we're given the run down on the many chemotherapy side effects. The chemo regime is Oxaliplatin with three days of oral Dexamethasone every two weeks.
Sue's first cycle was the 12th of December. She had two units of blood first before having the chemotherapy drug. She was then sent home with a two day infusion pump which finished yesterday.
Side effects wise Sue's showing a slight sensitivity to temperature and has some mild tingling in her hands and feet. That's it so far. My question is, are worse side-effects likely to develop over the coming days? Will the side-effects be worse after the second and third cycle?
We're both really happy that so far things seem to be okay but obviously want to be ready if side-effects are likely to worsen.
I know everyone's different but we just wanted to put the question out there.
Many thanks.
Hi!
I had12 cycles of oxaliplatin (FOLFOX) 3 years ago. The tingling and fatigue got a bit worse with each cycle and then I had quite bad mouth ulcers for the last 3 cycles, but all manageable. I found I got really tired once the dexamethasone stopped but it kept me awake so I had to take sleeping pills. The tingling is definitely worse with the cold, not great at the moment!
All the best,
Cecile x
Hi Knightfall
I was also on different chemo, but for me cycles so far have been random and plentiful in side effects but not linear increasing.
As for hands and feet sensitivity, i was advised to use thick unperfumed moisturiser at least twice a day on palms + soles. Along with soft padded shoes, warm socks and rubber gloves for handling even the lightest chemicals, i've found my sensitivity has massively reduced. Maybe worth trying?
3 cycles is blissfully short, so hopefully there won't be too many more side effects.
Good luck and hope suggests helps.
Hi Knighfall
Oxy is am enabling agent but you do not specify the chemo your wife is taking. Im guessng its capec.
Dexy was presribed for me but i did not bother with it nor anti diahorrea tabs. Ani nausea stuff was useful after cycle 3.
If getting stomach cramps then a hot water bottle refreshed regularly helps.
If going out wear lined thermal headgear..the sort that motorcyclists wear so only a bit of the forehead is displayed. Sunglasses as well. .
3 cycles should be ok ie manageable as long as bloods are ok. Vity b12supplements are worth a look.
Good luck
