Hi,
Spoken to my surgeon today, after 11 of pre adjuvant Imatinib to reduce the size of my Rectal GIST, I’ll be having an APR and Prostatectomy in the new year.
Always knew the APR was on the cards, but the Prostatectomy was news to me… apparently the Tumour is so close to the prostate that it and my seminal vesicles need to go…
Bit shocked tbh…
Now need to consider potential impotency and urinary incontinence as well as a permanent Stoma.
Has anyone else experienced similar (and can give me an idea of what to expect without putting the fear of god into me)?
Cheers x
Hi Gurnboy
Welcome to the forum .
We actually have a fantastic stoma group . I will link in Artsie who might be able to give you more insight . And Eddiestomart as they have much more knowledge than me but I just wanted to welcome you and hope some of that fear subsides with the information you get here .
I will also link in the stoma group underneath.
Feel free to pop onto the prostate cancer group as they can give you insight into that particular aspect and I think you will find it reassuring. They are a good and helpful bunch there too .
Take care ,

Hi Gurnboy
You must be in shock it’s so much to process. I didn’t have the same as you as my tumour was rectal allowing for an Lower Anterior Resection with an Ileostomy
My brother has prostate cancer and choose a different path opting for radiotherapy which was his choice at the time three years ago. Now it’s back he’s on permanent Hormone therapy which has its side effects. He’s managing really well, he’s upbeat lives in Spain and is getting on with it even with his hot flushes and tiredness. Think its definitely a good idea to join the Prostate group and the Stoma group
I had amazing support there with advice ,tips and experiences shared. I stayed away at six weeks post op. Flew to Spain, Ireland. I felt liberated with my Ileostomy. I had control and the terrible pressure in my back passage was gone.
Mine wasn’t Permanent Eddiestomart is and he’s really upbeat and positive. He’ll be along soon
Take care
Ann
Hi
I had an APR back in Feb 21 and have recovered well, no incontinence and back to normal in all areas but I didn't have a prostatectomy.
All I can say is be as positive as you can, and trust in the skills of the surgeons and the ability of the amazing human body and mind to heal.
As for the stoma, thats (in my experience) easily managed, generally predictable, and can in fact, be a relief. The alternative is a wbole lot worse. Some of us post poetry on the express yourself forum that may help?
My stoma (Eddie) and I have become good friends and I wouldn't reverse now even if it were an option. I'm having training on self irrigation in the new year that will free things up even more so I think a stoma is most definitely not to be concerned about
Good luck
Richard
Thanks Eddiestomart I knew you’d pop by. Gurnboy please don’t worry about the stoma. They’re little life savers and don’t stop you from doing anything.
if you click on people names you can read their back story. Eddiestomart would be a good start
I was a candidate for a reversal and contemplated not doing it so I can say with all honesty life’s great with or without I’m a no regrets type and my surgeon said I could be reversed back to a colostomy so I went for it
I’m getting a tattoo on my scar when I’m able it’ll be a first Tattoo for me and I am pretty old.
