Evening All,
well after seeing the oncologist last week and getting the results back from all my husbands tests being told even though it has spread to the liver they do believe he is a candidate for surgery on his liver but they want to give chemotherapy first then re scan and then operate on both liver and bowel together. They even used the word curative which at the time I was very positive and thought ok this is the best news that we could hear right now considering his advanced cancer diagnosis. He has his first chemo session on Friday followed by tablets for 2 weeks then a weeks break and then I believe he has 3 more cycles till they re scan him. My fear now is what if he is looking good at the moment to be able to operate but if the chemotherapy does not work and the liver Mets grow he may turn from curative to palliative and I am getting very anxious about it all.  Is this the usual for it to work this way should I ask them why they cannot operate now ?  sorry for the long description I am every day just worrying

thanks Gonzo

  • Sorry to hear of your husband’s diagnosis. In this situation they always give chemo first to shrink the tumours which helps with the surgery. The treatment you describe sounds like Capox which my husband had.

He was diagnosed in June with a tumour in caecum, ascending colon and a solitary met on his liver. He had two sessions of Capox then had a rare reaction so could not continue however the tumour in bowel diminished and liver halved in size. This led to him having a right hemicolectomy and liver resection in the same surgery last Tuesday. I was dreading the day of surgery but got through somehow. Surgeon called earlier than expected as it had all gone very well, He is coming home tomorrow, able to walk comfortably and eat some soft food,

I am in awe of these surgeons so skilled in their profession.

I won’t lie it hasn’t been easy but we have got through it together. Looking forward to some positive weeks ahead before chemo starts again. He is only able to have 50% dose but hoping that will be enough to mop up any stray cells.

I hope our story gives you a little encouragement.

I wish you both all the best.
