I start my chemo treatment on Thursday after being diagnosed nearly 3 mo the ago , I had to go for a pre assement at the hospital today and all was going well until I walked into the treatment area , I burst into tears thought I was going to have a panic attack , if I’m like this before treatment what’s it going to be like once it gets going , I’m very scared even now writing this I’m crying I really need to get a grip !

  • Hi lyncd66.

You are very much not alone. I had my pre-chemo blood tests in the chemo chair recently and felt like i melted with disbelief. And I have had all sorts of run for hills moments since.

I think we've got one hell of a journey ahead of us, but hope we can share the highs and lows together.

Wishing you all the very best for Thursday. Dig deep. You can do this.

  • Hi Lyncd66, I was diagnosed 3 years ago and had 12 cycles of chemo after surgery. The first visit was a bit of a shock as it all became too real and the 1st cycle was scary but to be honest I didn't find it as bad as I expected. You 'll soon get into the routine and although I was exhausted, the side effects were very manageable - the worst I found were the mouth ulcers, which only started after 9 or 10 cycles. Everyone is different though so just don't hesitate to talk to the nurses if there is something you are struggling to cope with, they have lots of tools to help. All the best for Thursday, take care x

  • Wow I started my chemo last Wednesday and had a full blown panic attack even before I got in to the reception area, it then settled then once I was called up to go in to the day unit I had another one, I’ve not had a panic attack for over 10 odd years, I think this whole experience, the cancer, the surgery, the chemo it’s all gotten to much for me and now I can’t control anything. I really hope you feel better soon x

  • Hi . Yes it is scary but the nurses will take very good care of you and sometimes the thought and ‘reputation’ of chemo is worse in your mind than in practice. Once you have the first one under your belt then you’ll know what to expect.
Some people like to sit quietly with a book while others chat to those around them. Presumably you can’t have anyone sitting with you due to COVID but tell the nurses that it’s your first time and how anxious you’re feeling and they’ll take good care of you

    Take care

  • Hi,  I agree with all the above. It is very scary, but the nurses will help you. Allow time on Thursday for you to adjust to the situation and explain you are very nervous. Sending big ((hugs))
