I was diagnosed many months ago with lower bowel cancer. I had a course of radio/chemotherapy (May/June time) which meant I had to take two chemo tablets in the morning then go to the hospital for radiotherapy, then when I got home two more chemo tablets. I had to do this every day (excluding weekends) for 5 weeks. Got thought that and was told the radiotherapy stays in your body for many weeks. When I went for a further colonoscopy they said the tumour had shrunk and they would operate to remove it. Well, the consultant said it should be either September or first two weeks in October, I received a phone call to say it will now be November. I told her that I am in so much pain I cannot wait that long, she explained that it could still be the radiotherapy working, but the pain is awful, its just like a dragging feeling in the rectum and pain in the stomach. I do take pain killers and morphine does help, but I just feel I cannot go on like this. She did get onto the consultant and he did understand how I felt and will try his best to get me in sooner. I am sure I am not the only one that is suffering, but its all the waiting for something to get done. I cannot eat much and weigh 8 stone when previously I weighed 10 stone. I seem to have no appetite at all.
Has anyone else had to wait this long? it just seems to go on and on.
Hi MaryChar2046
I thought it was roughly six to eight weeks after radiotherapy finished but I could be wrong . It’s not fun to be in terrible pain until Nov .
I would definitely phone our helpline staff to see the best way to go about getting help .
Your GP should be able to assist you also .
I think you might need to ask about how best to manage the pain aspect as you can’t do this part without professional input .
I really feel for you .

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, I do not even know who my GP is in all this time I have never heard a thing from them. My daughter has been wonderful, she gets on to the pharmacist, and they did prescribe codeine to be taken with Paracetamol, but they were useless, I also had Codeine Phosphate, but they did not make lot of difference. I do have some Morphine, that helps, but you cannot take too much of it. In a way I am blessed as I have the support of lovely family and friends. I have always tried to put others before myself, and it is now wonderful to receive so much love back, I think this and my faith upholds me when things are really tough. Thank you once again for replying and hopefully I may hear something about getting an earlier appointment.
That’s wonderful MaryChar2046. You clearly have a good team around you but keep in communication with your team so they know to keep your name at the top of the list . That’s a great idea Gemmary .
Codeine and the bowel can be incredibly tricky as I am currently discovering with my mum .
Take care and I hope you get a resolution soon .
