Hi Everyone,
I wasn't too happy about turning 60 this year but I'm so glad I did as I was sent the bowel screening kit and well you know what the outcome of that was or I wouldn't be posting on here.
The only downside is my surgery is on 19th September and being a huge Royalist I'm so disappointed that I won't be able to watch the Queen's funeral, in real time , but I'll see it on catch up I hope when I'm back home.
So bland diet starts tomorrow and pre op on Friday.
Would love to chat to anyone going through the same
All the best xxx
Hi Lickylou.
I had my surgery about a month ago, so very happy to share anything that might help.
There are some simple steps you can take now that can make the journey much easier - from what food to have in cupboard or freezer ready for your return to moving things to easy reach waist height; to putting a suction handle up in your shower to a shelf by the toilet for pads, wipes/washes and creams.
I also found having a few maternity teeshirts was great for comfort around scar areas and they normally have lovely uplifting messages - so win win.
Feel free to ask anything and all the best for your operation.
We are similar ages. I was diagnosed after using the screening kit and confirmed by a colonoscopy on 1st August. Complete shock as I had no symptoms and was extremely fit and well. I had taken previous screening tests which were negative. The new NHS test is apparently excellent- I see it as saving my life.
I had robotic surgery on 5th Sept to remove a small tumour in my rectum and underwent an anterior resection. I also had enhanced recovery and left hospital on the morning of Thursday 8th September. I am currently doing 10,000 steps a day and on a low fibre diet and recovering really well. My bowels are getting back to normal which is also amazing.
My staging was initially set at T3N1M0 but my surgeon commented it could be a T2. I get my histology results tomorrow and will learn whether I require just surgery or some form of adjuvant treatment.
My advice is just put yourself in the hands of the medical team - mine were amazing.
