I had robotic surgery on Monday to remove a small tumour from the top of my rectum plus an anterior resection. Everything has gone amazingly well and I am now at home recovering. It honestly does not feel like I have undergone surgery, albeit I am a little exhausted given this is my first experience of surgery. My surgeon was just incredible!
My surgeon explained that the tumour was contained locally and had not broken through the bowel wall. I will have a catch up next week on histology results although he has commented that he does not consider it to be too aggressive. I possibly have one local lymph node involved (everything else is fine) and wanted to ask whether this would require any follow up treatment or is it likely that surgery will suffice.
I would appreciate any feedback if someone has had a similar experience although I acknowledge each journey is different.
Hi Samcon
its great to hear the surgery has gone well, I'm sure there will be others with a similar scenario to you who can give you their experiences on potential further treatment, but as you say, your surgeon will give you a full plan if anything else is needed following the pathology report on the removed bits. When i was in hospital they did tell me to potentially expect Chemo as some of my nodes were swollen, however the histology from the pathologist showed no node involvement so no chemo was required.
Unfortunately until they get these reports is it pure guess work on their part.
Enjoy relaxing in front of the TV, or reading a few books while you recover from the surgery
I must say how incredible robotic surgery was for me. I am a relatively fit 60yr old man and my initial recovery has been astonishing. I acknowledge robotics may not be widely available, but I would strongly recommend the procedure if you qualify for it.
I was fortunate enough to be able to go privately via my work cover but the enhanced recovery in ICU after surgery certainly enhanced my recovery and wellness.
Hi Samcon and congratulations on ticking off the surgery box. Any follow up treatment will be decided on the results of the histology report so focus on taking it easy and building your strength back up - cross the next bridge if and when you need to.
Take care
