Having gone through Bowel cancer a few years ago, a good friend questions me often about her sister's diagnosis - who was diagnosed with rectal cancer several months, ago. Since then, she has undergone 6 mths. of Radiotherapy & chemo. at the renowned Christies, Manchester.
In past wekks she underwent a CT Scan, followed by a Pet Scan - both of which pronounced that she was 'all clear.' from cancer.
However, in the past couple of days, she endured a painful rectal examination, where the nurse found a lump of some description. Following that, she will need an overnight stay with GA - to take Biopsies.
I personally find this quite extraordinary, as I thought that PET scans were the ultimate scans in determining any form of cancer in the body?! Perhaps that's not so?
Thanks
Marianne
That’s my understanding too Marianne26 particularly if it’s sizeable. Not sure how todays super powered machines function but back when my mum was in treatment they said under .5 cm was hard to get a reading from and when she had her lung surgery they said at .8 it was borderline if the PET scan would pick it up .
Did they mention what size it was ? That’s the only factor I can think about . My mum has never had rectal examinations . Is that normal for rectal cancer ?
It’s strange there are so many variables involved .
Take care ,
