My wife has been suffering from pain after eating since Easter and a partial bowel obstruction for two months. We initially thought her problems might have a gynaecological source because she has a cyst on her ovary and fibroids. She recently went for a scan at UCLH and was told the symptoms she's been having were not gynaecological and that she should have a colonoscopy.
She last had a colonoscopy in 2016 where she was told she had polyps. There was difficulty removing all of them and she was told she should be followed up every three years but she has not had a colonoscopy since then.
A couple of days ago she had a private appointment with Christopher Wadsworth at One Welbeck. He has referred her for a colonoscopy this Tuesday. She also spoke to a NHS colorectal nurse on Friday and informed that she be given an appointment for a NHS colonoscopy within two weeks.
She is now unsure what to do. She is very anxious so would like to have the colonoscopy as soon as possible, but she is worried that if she has the private colonoscopy and it does find cancer then she will not be able to access NHS care as well as being worried that Onewelbeck does not have the resources to manage her case.
Does anybody have any suggestions what we should do? Is it risky going down the private road? Does anyone have experience of OneWelbeck or Christopher Wadsworth? Does anybody have experience of treatment for bowel caner at UCLH? If anybody has experiences of private care for bowel cancer can they recommend them, please.
Many thanks.
Hi,
I have recently had treatment on the nhs, I have private medical insurance but to be honest the speed of the nhs was very fast so I did not see the point in going private
normally going private would be to significantly speed things up,
if you can get a colonoscopy in 2 weeks on the nhs as an urgent referral for suspected cancer then that may be your better option as going private is only likely to save you a few weeks at best, but just my opinion based on the experience I have had recently
and a bonus for me was that my medical insurance paid me for using the nhs to the tune of £150 per night
from when they fist suspected I had cancer to surgery it took 6 weeks, and that was with me having a weeks holiday during that same period. I can not fault the NHS
Hi ,
I am Not sure what the policy is in England but I think quite a lot of people get diagnosed privately but transfer their care over to NHS . I know my friend transferred after her private funding ran out and stayed with the same consultant .
