Hi guys, one for you ladies,

My surgery is next Thursday July 14th and I’m going to be on my period then and I’m freaking out about it as I can’t wear tampons See no evil can you wear knickers in surgery so I can wear a sanitary towel or should I maybe ask my GP to prescribe me some meds to stop my period for a bit. Also I’ve found out today that 2 surgeons will be operating on me, is that normally the case do you know?

Any advice would be very much appreciated

Thanks

  • Hi VJS1985

Please don’t freak out about your period. It’s natural and could happen to many plus they won’t be going in that way

If you’re really anxious phone one of your nurses and they will be able to reassure you.

Im not sure what operation you are having but in my case I had a LAR. My surgeon said that he needed a day to remove mine starting with keyhole finishing with open. It was six hours and when I went in for it the theatre  was pretty full of staff.

I don’t think for a minute that my surgeon stood for six hours he had help  in my daze afterwards I thought how did he get a cup of tea. Pretty obviously one of his understudies did some of the easier work.

Have you got your list of things needed for your stay?

  • Hi There, thanks for that, I believe that is the same procedure I’m having done robotically See no evil I’ve got a 7cm tumour right down in my rectum, well 10cm away from me anus but he did say there would be enough rectum left to reconnect after a few months of the stoma, did you have a stoma x

  • Hi VJS1985

I had a LAR with a temporary loop ileostomy I had a 10cm growth  if you click on peoples names you can read their bio

My nieces friend had the same op too she’s forty so younger and she had robotic and recovered faster than I did. It wasn’t the age it was my surgery was very invasive to get at the large cancer. Robotic wasn’t an option for me. So that’s a real positive

I have a stoma called Whoopi she’s my life saver and once she settled has been no bother.
I stayed away in a lovely hotel six weeks post op I’ve been to Spain to see my brother and Ireland to see my son. I am better now with my stoma than when I had continual pressure feeling I needed to sit on a toilet.

I was so relieved to get that cancer out when I felt my stoma I smiled. So don’t worry about a stoma. I wear skinny jeans and no one can see it.

If you have one join the support group here. Amazing advice from so many from the community

I am eleven months on so she’s part of me and I am enjoying life to the full

Reversals are backlogged excuse the pun  It’s just the staffing shortages and they’re not priority   Cancer in the bin that’s the priority

    Hope this info helps

  • Dont worry about having your period.Im sure they have met that lots of times.

Also I think there is often more than one surgeon in theatre my op lasted 8 hours so Im sure they needed a cup of tea, short break.loo break etc.

All the best for next week.do let us know how it goes.what op are you having?

Dont forget to take a long lead for your phone etc.dry shampoo is useful as well

If you click on peoples name you can see how they got on

Also dont worry about having a stoma.they are really easy to change and empty.

  • Hi VJS,

Met a chap in QA this morning who was in for a reversal 9 months after his original operation. Another patient of Mr Conti.!!!! I shouldn't worry about your period. The nurses will sort you out, and they've seen it all before.
