Hello everyone diagnosed today with stage 2 squamous cancer of the bowel.  I’m due to start three months of chemo tablets and radiation.
I live alone and just wondering if anyone has any advice on what to stock up on to help the side effects.  Also what peoples experience of the side effects are please.  Thank you very much xx

  • Hi Ivymay, sorry to hear about your diagnosis.  Recommend having anti-sickness and anti-diarrhoea pills, along with a good moisturiser for the skin where you are getting the RT.  My husband was supplied with all these by the hospital when he was being treated (we are Scottish), although he didn't need the anti-sickness pills.  Make sure you take the chemo tablets when they recommend - usually that is immediately after food.  Don't wait  or take on an empty stomach, or they will go straight through your system.  Other things that may help are a non-perfumed shower gel/soap -  although we both used the Sanex 0% one, he found the Sanex Biome Protect Moisturising shower gel better and more soothing.  It can help to keep your moisturiser in the fridge if you need a more cooling treatment.  In spite of using the anti-diarrhea pills, he also used Fibogel as well further into his treatment - although that sounds contradictory, it really helped him.  His main siide effect (apart from diarrhoea) was cumulative tiredness, which peaked a week or 2 after the RT finished.  His white cell count also dropped towards the end of treatment, but the hospital didn't think it was bad enought to treat.  a healthy diet with lots of protein and veg helps. After the first week or two after treatment started, he needed to sleep when he got home from the hospital, and the amount of sleep he needed increased week on week.  Hope that helps.  x

  • Hi . You’ve had a great reply from SuziQ. It’s important to only use the cream supplied by the hospital on the area being treated as I think they like to avoid any containing zinc particles. I found that my feet became a bit tingly from the chemo tablets so used Aveeno with Shea Buttter on them. I’ve attached a link to a post about radiotherapy
