I was talking to a friend today, and the subject got onto brain fog, from both chemo and covid. She asked what it was like.....but my brain fog kicked in and I didn't know how to reply!! Its not like dementia though yes you can forget. It seems to have a mind of its own.  Anyone help with a description??

  • Tried to answer a few times but didn’t get through

  • Hello Gemmary, brain fog is looking at a bill, saying I’ll pay it….2 weeks later bill is still there. Don’t bake with brain fog, as some ingredients are sure to be forgotten.

  • Yes, Chemo brain is what we called it. Hitting a brick wall mid sentence, or even mid-word. Running out of steam in a conversation. Losing thread. Feeling flat and tired a lot. I’ve been lucky that Chemo effects have faded, but they linger still and, as you suggest, a bout of omicron - or is that a bout with omicron - hasn’t helped! Have become heavily reliant on lists, emails to self etc. And set a time limit on the need to concentrate, especially filling in forms.

I hope you also find T he fog will lift, even if only gradually.

    Every blessing
    Wellspring
  • Chemo brain: Previous vocabulary gone completely so can’t find the word you want. Needing to make lists all the time to remember things you’d previously easily hold in your mind. Completely losing your thread mid sentence - it’s like seeing in your head where you want to get to, then a mist descends which you can’t see through. It is very very frustrating!!!  (11 months on since chemo finished.)

Also when I type anything it looks like gobbledegook with so many letters transposed.  Anyone else like this?

Best Wishes to all fighting the fog.

  • IM exactly the same Net77 . It’s really embarrassing, I can’t remember simple words and forget peoples names who I’ve known for years . I have to describe simple words because I can’t get them out .I was telling my friend about how my dad always used to wear overalls but I couldn’t think of the word overall . I had to say my dad always wore an all in one thingy that he would work in . It happens all the time . I can see the word in my head but it doesn’t seem to connect to my mouth . The thing is I finished treatment over a year ago and I’m still struggling although it could also be due to menopause, I hate it Weary

  • Hi net, I have all this I used to pride myself with my grammar and handwriting now I can barely string a sentence together without making a fool of myself, I am unsure of where to put punctuation marks etc. A few weeks back I thought I was aged 67 when in fact I'm 66,i finished my chemotherapy for lung cancer about a year ago and my oncologist said your consentrarion should improve over time but imo I'm getting worse and Im uncertain whether it's the effects of the chemo or age or both, I have become very forgetful and my consentrarion levels are none existent. I really hope things improve but at the moment I have zer2o energy to do anything
