Hi all,
I have just joined this group and had a quick look through some posts but unable to see what i need so far so i apologise if i am repeating questions others have asked.
I am after some advice and opinion on how things will go and any questions i should ask.
My wife (43) has Bowel cancer, liver mets and has been on chemo of Capecitabine and Oxiliplatin. She also had to have emergency surgery as tumour burst on bowel and this was thankfully removed. However, last week we were told that despite some shrinkage on her Liver, she had new growth on some of it and also on her peritoneum. He then advised we will now start on treatment of Capecitabin with Irinotecan. He did pre warn of side effects of hair loss/diarrhoea. Also said low success rate and if this does not work her last line of treatment would be Lonsurf.
Since then, i have contacted Professor Murphy at Basingstoke for hopefully a second opinion.
Has anyone any expericence both good or bad on this drug? What is the name of this combo? Her last one was shortened to Capox.
Also, any questions that we should now ask of our consultante? Anybody that people would recommend turning to for a 2nd opinion? Both desperate for some success. We are based in Liverpool and under St Helens and Knowsley trust.
Thanks and good luck to all on here.
Hello
My husband was diagnosed with bowel cancer a couple of years ago, wish spread to his lungs. He started on Irinotecan and Cetuximab on his first line treatment. He had a severe reaction to the Cetuximab, which he had to stop after three months. He didn't loose his hair on his head with the Irinotecan, although it went a lot thinner. He suffered with fatigue for a few days following treatment but has still continues to work from home on a full time basis.
He had a few months of maintenance last year and then started on Oxaliplatin as his second line treatment which finished at the beginning of this year and is now back on Irinotecan, the side effects this time are much the same. He is more tired this time around, his hair has thinned out again and his nails are brittle.
Those are the side effects he has had but in contrast to this, Irinotecan was very effective first time around and we are hoping it will do this same this time too :-)
All in all, we have realized over the last two years that everyone is different, this includes the symptoms and the condition itself. Although it can be quite hard, all we can do is take it one day at a time and wait for the scan results and then take it from there.
As your wife has already had scans and results, I personally don't know what a second opinion at this stage would be useful.
My thoughts are with you both, stay strong.
Best wishes
Karen

Hi Liverpool FC
Is it this Mr Murphy you have contacted ? No personal experience or recommendations but he seems to take on more complex cases if its at all possible .He also seems to be quite prompt with consultations which people have reported helpful .
It’s certainly the name that comes up a lot on the forums if that’s any help .
Take care ,

Hi Liverpool FC
There are so many options, and it sounds as you’re doing everything to make sure they’re being checked out. When I heard that my cancer had spread to my liver, I also checked out some options, and found this site: https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/bowel-cancer/advanced/treatment/specialist-treatment-for-secondary-liver-cancer
Perhaps your medical team has explored these possibilities already, but just in case, and as you’re searching for what might help, thought it worth passing on the link.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
