Furry tongue

Hello ,

I have just had my 3rd cycle of 9. oxaliplatin and 5fu, Other than feeling really tired the only other symptoms I have is the tingly feeling from cold things and furry tongue. Finding even water hard to get down. I am ok with really sweet or sour things to eat. (not very healthy) Any suggestions. Ginger and lemon tea ok if I have it with a sweet biscuit.

Feel a little silly asking these questions as so many more people have worse side effects.

  • Hi Juls,

It sounds as though you might have oral thrush.  Is your furry tongue white?  Oral thrush is a common infection when undergoing chemo (I had it 2 or 3 times over 4 months), the chemo upsets the balance your mouth and allows the  bacteria to grow.  It's easy to get rid of;  you need to let your team or GP know and they will prescribe something for you. Thrush along with chemo really messes with your taste buds.

  • Jut been reading your profile and updated status. Sounds like you are doing amazing. I have had radiotherapy, now on chemo for 18 weeks (9 cycles) then hopefully 10cm rectal tumour will have shrunk enough to have surgery. So still have a way to go .

    Take care and keep safe

  • Hi Juls.

I'm doing well thank you.  I've just read your profile and you too are doing amazingly well.  You're done your radiotherapy and 1/3 way through your chemo - well done!  I had to break everything down into small bits otherwise I became overwhelmed.

I found the worst part of the chemo being the unbelievable tiredness and weariness, I could have slept for Britain.  I hope you have a good support network in place to allow you to rest when you need to.  Please keep us updated.

Take Care & look after yourself.
