First meeting with surgeon

Had my appointment this morning with the surgeon,  I will be having my op in about 4 weeks. Having lower anterior resection and an ileostomy. Reversible, but could be about 12mths wait. A lot to take in. The good news is they are quite confident it hasn't spread.

I feel surprisingly calm, maybe it will hit me later.

  • Hi  I remember feeling quite relieved after my meeting because it hadn’t spread. You’ll probably feel a bit anxious nearer the time but it’s a standard operation that lots of us on here have had so there’s lots of support and advice available.

Hope you’ve got some nice things planned over the next few weeks to keep you busy

    Take care

  • Hi Debbie

I felt the same, it takes a while to process it. If you read my bio I had a LAR though mine was keyhole and incision so there’s differences in each individual.
It’s a relief to have your treatment plan in place and you can plan your packing and leave it up to them.
    Thanks for sharing

  • Thanks for your replies. I now have a bit of time to get organised and as you say plan a few nice days out. Apparently I am having keyhole surgery, possibly robotic if available. I just have a feeling of relief that there is no spread, I have spent the last three weeks thinking the worst. I know there is lots ahead of me but hopefully I will cope.

    One day at a time.

  • Thank you - will do xx

  • Hi Debbie62.  I guess many of us must have felt very similar as the waiting is so stressful. Once I'd had the meeting with the surgeon I was much calmer and could see a way forward.  I had LAR Jan 2021 followed by 3 months chemo and have recovered very well.

I'd suggest between now and your op you get as fit as possible - I don't mean going to gym (unless you want to) but lots of walking, so you're in the best possible shape to recover quickly after the operation.  I was shocked how weak I was afterwards and was fairly fit beforehand.

There's lots of support on here.  Keep us posted.

    Best wishes,
