Portal vein embolization pain and shivering a week later

Just wondering what other’s experiences have been of this procedure?

After the op I had a few hours of pain but it then subsided and I have been pretty much pain free since.

That is until a week later when I felt uncomfortable in bed on that side and through the night the pain got worse and I couldn’t get warm.

The next day I was much better, slight pain as though I had pulled a muscle but I took some paracetamol and all was well until bed time when the pain got worse again and I just couldn’t get warm.

I had a fitful night’s sleep and am feeling much better now and have taken some more paracetamol. I notice the neuropathy in my feet and fingers has come back, probably a sign things aren’t quite right.

Any similar experience or suggestions?

  • Hi . I’ve no direct experience of this but I think I’d be tempted to speak to someone about it to check that you haven’t got an infection? It’s worth checking your temperature without the paracetamol in case they ask. Can you ring the hospital where you had your treatment? If not ask to speak to your doctor. The neuropathy will be reacting to the cold but whether that’s your body temperature or the weather temperature I’m not sure.

Better to get checked out to be on the safe side

    Take care

  • Thanks Karen

Since my first posting I’ve had another sleep and I’ve gone shivery again, took my temperature but it is normal, my last paracetamol were at 7.00 am. I did a lateral flow test and it was negative. I mean, it is a cold day!

I spoke to the nurse yesterday afternoon and she said to phone on Monday if I am still having problems but if got really bad over the weekend to go to A and E.

    Hardly any pain.

  • Hello Jopeg, tell your doctor in the hospital. They can have a quick look at it, by a  scan or x ray just to make sure it’s sitting correctly for you. Also tell them your where shivering as well.  I had similar. So it’s fine now and no problems.  Take care

  • Thanks Helen

I expect that is what they will do if I am not right on Monday. Unfortunately the hospital where I had the operation is difficult to get to, but maybe I can be scanned at my local hospital and they can look at the results.
