Cancer has spread…..again

Just saw my brilliant surgeon & while I got the good news that the 2 lesions in my liver have shrunk after 1 year of chemo, unfortunately there are 2 intra abdominal lesions that are causing concern. Previously had left hemicolectomy for large tumour removal followed by 6 months chemo in 2018. Developed recurrence in 2020 with duodenal obstruction which resulted in further surgery & then began chemo again. Surgeon cannot perform operation required for this further recurrence & after discussion has referred me to Christies in Manchester. Waiting to hear if they’ll consider me suitable for surgery which would be pretty major & include HIPEC. Has anyone had experience of this procedure? I’ve read loads of publications in the past 2 days & the information/outcomes are conflicting depending on the authors! Finding it hard to digest everything at the moment. Liver surgeons say tumours are treatable but won’t do anything till abdominal lesions treated & it may be that Christies won’t treat abdominal lesions while liver lesions are present, stuck in catch 22. Also, while these discussions are ongoing my chemo has been halted so that brings the worry that tumours will start to grow again. Don’t have anyone to share feelings with, my son is studying for his GCSEs & so I’m trying to be strong & positive for him as he’s obviously worried about me but I want to keep him focused on his school work. Sorry for such a long, miserable post, just thought it might help to hear from someone else who has been in a similar situation.

  • Hi

Sorry to hear your recent news and it was certainly more a case of hitting a bumps on the road quite a few times for my mum  until she eventually caught a break and all the micro disease seemed to surface and be done with . After seven years she then had no further presentation of disease and has been clear for five years but it’s a long time to be in active treatment .

Have you had a look at Mr Jamie Murphy’s information on Hipec etc . I am going to tag  in as her husband has had a similar spread and her insights might prove beneficial .

My mum actually got her bowel and liver resection in the one procedure way back so I would not give up hope until they have a good look at your scans and see what the surgeons can achieve .

Christies is a centre of excellence in that area and able to do more of the complex resections than the general teaching hospitals and a good facility for your team to send you to.

    Take care ,

  • You can see two different surgeons attended in the one procedure , that can happen in the more extensive procedures .

  • HI freebird, Court tagged me as my husband had cytoreductive surgery in October some people call it HIPEC, the HIPec part is actually the chemotherapy bath they use after surgery.  My husband had three surgeons in attendance, one was a liver surgeon.  He had been told all the hard stuff about the surgery, it’s a big op. He did however do very well. He had no complications after surgery which was complex as he also had a complex hernia. So abdominal wall reconstruction and also a reversal of his illeostomy.  He was home on day 10 much to my surprise and has continued to recover well. He is 12 weeks post op, he is on a rehab programme doing excercise, he has rejoined the gym and amazes me everyday…at the post op consultation the surgeon was delighted with the outcome and declared him to be cancer free, he has just had a follow up scan so we are hoping he remains that way. I wish you well, lots of information around Basingstoke, Christie’s and imperial are centres of excellence that do cytoreductive and Hipec surgery. Good luck xx

  • Thank you for sharing your experiences & it’s good to hear your husband is doing well. I’m reassured after reading your message that just maybe I can have all that’s required in one go with liver surgeons also in attendance. It helps just to talk with someone else

  • Thank you for your message & I will certainly look what has been written by Mr Murray. Thanks also for tagging process in, it’s definitely helpful to talk with someone who has been through something similar. With some luck I’ll be deemed suitable for surgery & maybe even have combined procedures with different surgeons at the same time.

  • Oops, in answer to your earlier message, I’ll read what Jamie Murphy has written not Jamie Murray, don’t think the tennis player also works as a consultant surgeon!

  • RoflRofl. Your quite right Murphy. You can tell I am Scottish ! It must be ingrained in my brain !

We will keep Him on the tennis courts !!!Grinning
