I am a nurse, and was working in colorectal surgery for 10 years. I was diagnosed with rectal cancer 2 days ago…. Lots of stuff ahead before they decide what to do. I am in the same position as everyone else here even though I guess I know more from my work experience but want to offer my support as a fellow cancer patient and I have no doubt I will need the same in the coming weeks……I have cried, and am scared ….. but something like this forum gives us all support as we all know what we are all feeling. sending big hugs to everyone here.
A big welcome . Knowledge can be both a comfort and a burden sometimes but great to have you join us and bringing your wealth of experience.
Hope we too can offer you support as you work your way through this chapter in your life .
Take care ,

Gosh I’m so sorry you find yourself here when you’ve been supporting patients with this for ten years.
You must have an overload of knowledge on the subject which is frightening. Positives and negative’s it must be a brain overload. I didn’t have a clue what an ileostomy was I think it was easier somehow.
I hope that you have a treatment plan in action and you can take some time out from work.
Thanks for joining, I’ve had so much support here, I have to also say my team in the NHS have been fantastic, my treatment amazing and the care and support from them outstanding.
Thank you for all the amazing work you have done for us all. Now is a time to put yourself first and have some you time.

Thanks for your lovely message. I have another ct on Tuesday even though my abdo and pelvis was clear ( apart from a hernia)mri at sone point next week and mdt on the 18th. I am having treatment in the hospital I work in which is fine as it’s a brilliant place. I have shown my bum to people I know and farted on the consultant during the colonoscopy so embarrassment isn’t an issue after that. He said it was high up enough not to have a permenant colostomy in his opinion. You mentioned ileostomy….. I am pretty sure that will be on the cards and I know obviously what comes with that ….. I can deal if it’s needed….. I think of so so many brave people I have looked after that have gone through this and come out strong….. they inspire me to be the same with whatever is ahead. I hope you are doing ok yourself! I guess I will be taking strength from people like you soon sending you lots of love and big hugs …. Imp
This card was designed for my NHS angels that saved me. I think you also deserve this as your part of them.

Good Luck with your tests. You’ve got a great sense of humour. It must be so strange being on the other end (literally) of the procedures

It seems so unfair your having worked for ten years with people struck down with Rectal Cancer.
I will know more about my situation on Tuesday with a chosen telephone clinical review.
But as the date and time draws ever nearer I am tending to think about the old adage of ignorance is bliss.
My journey started possibly years ago and my being convinced I had IBS as over the counter treatments seemed to work well.
But hey ho the reality dawned and the truth will be exposed shortly.
Take care and all the best in your journey and although it seems at times your are alone there are plenty of us walking the same path as yourself.
Hi and a warm welcome from me too. It’s natural to be scared but we’ll be happy to help and support you through this.
Take care
