Stoma slowing down on day Six after APER

Good morning

Day six after my APER with permanent stoma and arrived home yesterday.

Problem is, almost as soon as I left the hospital my stoma went quiet.

Output was ok nad mostly formed into a thick sludge but have had nothing since apart from a blob falling out when changing the pad and a bit of wind and gurgling.

Spoke to the Stoma Nurse who said it looks like the consistency has gone too thick now.

I was one two laxido's a day to prevent constipation prior to surgery and of course the low fun/ low residue diet.

Hospital food was hit and miss with mainly mashed potatoes and minced beef / cottage pie. Salmon fish cake yesterday and was assured it was low res.

I have been told to take a laxido this morning and see how I get on.

Any tips in dealing with this kind of stuff please? Will avoid food for the rest of the day apart from a cup a soup and plenty of fluids.

Also have the issue of my bladder being slow to wake up properly after the op so emptying my bladder is also hard work.

Thanks for any tips and advice and have already amended forthcoming meals.

  • Hi Minion Kev,

I also had this after my APR surgery.  Stoma worked once in hospital then shut up shop!  I took the laxido but what I really found worked was prune juice.  You are quite right to drink plenty.  I had very little appetite after the op.  My colorectal nurse said the thing to do was small things to eat very often, to just graze all day.  I used to make a sandwich (with white bread - low residue) cut it in half and put half in the fridge.  Then the remaining half I cut into small squares and just nibbled.  Also used to mash a banana.

I had my APR in August and now can eat pretty much anything.

  • Hi  and congrats on getting through the op. It’s early days yet and hopefully your stoma will settle down in time. As Jane says prune juice has a laxative effect and I found a cup of tea used to go straight through me. Having said that bananas usually tend to thicken the output. Are you on codeine or any painkillers still? Codeine in particular tends to slow the output. You sound to be doing the right things by having soup and fluids and it might be worth jerking a diary for a cooy,s of weeks to see how various foods affect your stoma.
Ive attached a link below to one of the bag makers sites which talks about how different foods affect the output which may hopefully help abd it’s good that you’re able to talk to your stoma nurse

My bladder was ‘slow’ for a couple of weeks after surgery but settled down eventually

  • Thanks

I am the same with the appetite and will just stick to soup until I am at the hospital tomorrow and see what they say.

Thanks again and thanks for replying

  • Hi

Thanks for your reply. Am on aspirin for a heart condition which cropped up from nowhere and paracetomol for pain. Been lucky on the pain front and only needed tramadol once. Am allergic to codiene so not a problem.

I am an overthinker so maybe I just need to have patience,

Thanks for that link. Some good info

    Take care
