My husband had a bowel operation in October and was in hospital for 4 weeks. Back home, I feel we have struggled with him having poor appetite, bloating, and sometimes being sick. The last straw came about 2 weeks ago when he said he felt too full to even drink. At that point I took him back to hospital and he has been there since. They put him on water and cleared a blockage. We were told as long as the stoma worked in less than 3 days not to worry, so we haven't!! But obviously, things have backed up. Does this sound familiar to anyone, and if so, what's the solution?

  • Oh  What a rotten time you’re both having with this. Are the scans not picking anything up? He shouldn’t be getting constantly blocked like this. My lack of appetite and sickness was caused by an infected fluid build up behind the join that they had to drain but my stoma still worked so it doesn’t sound the same as your hubby. Really hope they get to the bottom of it soon

    Take care

  • Gosh.you are having a dreadful time.just wanted you to know we are all thinking of you and hope that they can find out the cause and it gets sorted soon so that you can both get on with your life without these problems

  • Thank you, both.

I think the first spell in hospital was because the bowel was in ileus, and I'm not sure its ever been right. This was obviously a blockage. The stoma seems to be working better than its ever done, but the real test is real food!!!! He has just been promoted to jelly and icecream. It just takes sooooo long. I suppose holiday times don't help matters when everything stops!!

  • Well, He was all set to come out of hospital last Friday, when he was sick on the Thursday morning, and we are back where we started again. There is a difference. The consultant can see a twist in the bowel and plans to sort that out next week. Its no wonder he never seemed to improve. In all he has been in hospital 3 months except for two weeks at home!

  • . What a shame it’s taken them so long to find this but hopefully this will put an end to all the problems he’s had. Bet you can’t wait to get him home. Has he lost a lot of weight? x

  • An awful lot of weight, and he wasn't big to start with. I can remember when I first met him as a student I could see his ribs. Very similar now!

  • Hi Nanny Anny

You are both having a terrible time. It’s been going on for so long I remember when we were talking about mince pies.
Now hopefully they can resolve this issue.

  • Oh  he really has had a tough time . Are they any further forward .

My mum lost three stones on chemo and to be honest I had never seen her so skinny . I actually found it really hard at times to see her so depleted . However whilst she selected not to go back up to the full three stones she did very slowly regain two . I was surprised how long that took to regain .

Anyway I think he has had an arduous time and I hope this levels out for him very soon . Must be very hard for both of you to keep your spirits up and particularly during the restrictions of covid .

Much love to you both ,
