Hello all,

Just keen to get a sense of how soon after bowel cancer surgery patients are usually re-scanned? Within a few weeks after the op?

Particularly for stage 4 patients who are then going on to have a liver resection.

  • Mmm I am trying to remember! I think my mum was scanned three months later .

They kept her at three months scans for quite a while if I remember correctly . Do they plan to do some chemo after her surgery ?

  • Just remembered my mum had an area of concern after her original liver resection . So did a watch and wait , scanned three months later , more chemo then the larger liver surgery occurred thereafter .

    Thanks , that's really helpful.

My Mum has a telephone consultation with her oncologist on Tuesday and she received an appointment letter today for a CT scan on Sunday. It will be only 4 weeks after her op that she'll be scanned again which seems quite soon.

Her bowel op wasn't a complete success as they don't think they got it all out so I'm wondering if that's the reason why she's having a scan so soon. I'm also thinking it may just be because she has a call with her oncologist on Tues (which was in the diary before she had the surgery) and they just want to get the full picture.

The original plan was bowel surgery, followed by a liver resection, and then more chemo. I'm not sure if that plan will now change given there are probably still some cancells in her bowel..

  • They certainly sent my mum back for more chemo for to sort out the areas of concern then went forward from there .

Do you think they are going to do some radiotherapy in the area concerned ?

They did mention they may do chemo or radio on the bit they were concerned about buy they said it would be decided at the MDT. It's now a waiting game to see what is happening next.

Did you Mum have her bowel op or liver resection first?

  • Back then they actually did it as a combined resection . Both her bowel and her liver . However I don’t think that’s done very much now . Nor was the liver successful . The second year after chemo she had her second larger resection of her liver . 73% . She was just saying yesterday whilst it was a slower recovery she found the bowel harder to recover from in terms of comfort . She found the liver easier .
