Steroids

I had my first FOLFOX yesterday. So far so good........... I left with anti-emetics to use as needed which I have not had to take as yet. I also left with Dexamethasone tablets 1 three times a day. I am not a fan of steroids BUT I will do what I need to do to get through this journey responsibly.

Are we given steroids just to prevent Nausea and Vomiting or are there other reasons or side effects they are helping to keep at bay?

I will try calling Chemo Information Line later - just thought i would ask you guys first.

Thanks - Ali

I would take the anti sickness pills, it’s a lot easier to control the nausea if you’ve already started taking them. My husband was given 3 days worth, is that what you have? He wasn’t given steroids though.

  • Yes, I was given 3 days worth as well. Thank you for your advice. Did your husband get nausea on the anti sickness pills? It makes sense that it would be easier to control if you are on the pills already.

  • Hi , I was given the same steroids, 3 times a day for 3 days.  I believe they are to alleviate the side effects, nausea, etc.  However, I suffered with insomnia while I was taking them so after a few cycles I spoke to my Oncologist and she told me to stop taking the evening one which really helped.  Maybe see how you get in for a few cycles then discuss with your team.x

  • I’m on 3rd session of Folfix and taking 3 days of Dexamethasone plus anti sickness tablet. No sickness encounters but always constipated for first 3 days due to tablets .Prescribed Lactalose which does the trick.Regarding insomnia I struggle on first night but was told to take dexamethasone after breakfast and lunch only which helps. The only symptoms so far are a little tiredness and tingling fingers when touching cold objects.

  • They told me not to take the last one after 3pm.
