Feeling sick and full, also pain.

My husband is 5 weeks post surgery today.  He has only been on food for a week. some days he eats well. Other days its a struggle, and he complains of feeling full and pain after eating. We also had a bad night the other night where he woke up feeling sick and was eventually sick (green stuff), not a lot. Is this all to be expected? When do things improve?

  • Hi NannyAnny, It doesn't sound normal, I certainly never had that problem, and I think you need to run it past his hospital team now. It may be that he only needs something to help the digestion but best checked out.

Hope he gets sorted ok, John

  • Yes I agree, you need to ask his team. Ring the out of hours number if you have to now its the weekend.

  • Hi Both,

I rang the stoma nurse the morning after he was sick, and she thought it was something he ate. I've to ring if it happens again. Meanwhile we are being very careful!!!

  • Hi . Please keep a close eye on him. Has he had bloods recently? I was readmitted a month after surgery as I wasn’t improving and was struggling to eat and I had an infected fluid build up behind the rejoin. They diagnosed this with a scan and my CRP marker was into 3 figures (should be less than 5)

Really hope he starts to improve - I know he won’t want to be readmitted but if things don’t start to improve then please don’t be fobbed off

    Take care

  • Hi All,

The nurse rang yesterday and said to keep him on fluids and to take some Lactulose, which he did. By nine last night he was feeling sick, and this morning hey presto- 3 bag fulls!! There is definitely a pattern emerging here. The nurse rings again tomorrow so will see what she says!!

  • Hope your fella is feeling better now but just to share my experience I’m in recovery after stoma surgery 7 weeks ago but in the first 2 weeks there was very little movement in my bowels and I was suffering from terrible acid and feeling sick all the time but now I’m much better and all I can put it down to is drinking plenty of fluids I’m on 2 litres a day at least so my advice is DRINK DRINK DRINK and keep to a low fibre diet .

difficult times but we’ve got this !

Lactulose is non absorbable sugar for constipation, any idea why he was given it? Do the nurses think he’s not passing the food into the stoma still? Side effects include sickness and bloating and my husband with a stoma still gets the odd bit of bloating and wind like pain 10 weeks on from his op.

You’ve both had such a tough time recently. I do hope he starts to improve soon! Keep us updated if you can!

  • Hi Both,

Things have improved beyond all imagination!!! He is 7 weeks post op, is eating practically anything now, and has not had to use lactulose again.  His stomach has gone down to normal size. I'd just like him to put some weight on now!! They said at a check up last Tuesday this would happen eventually.

  • Oh that is such good news  - you must be so relieved? The weight will come back on eventually - maybe not all of it - but it’s good to hear that he’s eating normally again

    Take care
