Diagnosed with adenocarcinoma of caecum, i’m 55 only had one bleed, but had a ruptured appendix in May where nothing suggested cancer at that time.

due to the one bleed and still having abdo pain i fought for further investigation, CT appreared normal 5 weeks ago but colonoscopy diagnosed the cancer.

today i got a call from surgeon that i’m having a right hemicolectomy on Sat, this off course is positive bit still anxious re potential spread.

Having abdo pelvis and Chezt CT scan tomorrow, i’m more petrified about results than actual operation.

any advice or any similar experiences would help me get through this

thank you

  • Hi

The CT Scan being normal just five weeks ago is a big positive !
My mum had a right side ascending resection and it was relatively straightforward! Took a few days for her bowel to start functioning again but a few weeks after the surgery she was making great progress ! She did not require a stoma and control has always been quite good ! They took her to high dependency for two days then onto a ward setting . She had an epidural although they are not used so much now ! She transferred onto oral meds and was able to self care once the epidural was removed ! She was really well cared for !

The scans cause so much anxiety but I think they will have had a reasonable look at you recent scan !

  • Tgenkd for response, how was your mum diagnosed? did she present with symptoms? if do how long did she gave them? sorry for all questions

  • She actually was picked up in a bowel screen ! She had no symptoms! Her tumour had banded round her colon but was not blocking it or obviously bleeding so a complete surprise!
Had it just grown inwards she may have had some symptoms and picked up earlier ! But it had banded round her colon and folded over . The consultant said the registrar had just spotted it as he was withdrawing the camera ! It really was not causing a problem in her colon !

Lots of people here have symptoms for a long time and still operable and curable !

  • Hi L16

I had an extended right hemi colectomy 16 days ago  you can see my Dx in profile

I was nervous pre op but all went smoothly. I was eating solid foods by day 3, out of hospital day 5 and back to working 8hr days by day 13  I even ate chillis and a curry today ( day 16)

I will see my onc this Monday to hear what If anything they want to do next.
good luck for your op. Awaiting CT scans never easy. Or the histology wait afterwards.
    keep us updated.

  • Thank you for your reply, gosh you have been through a lot already but see you had speedy diagnosis to surgery which is great, before the screening test did you have any symptoms ?

i don’t understand the grading you have but know the findings so far is well to moderate differentiated

    X

  • As with everyone it didn’t feel speedy from bowel scan to colonoscopy ( a month ) but at that time I still thought it wasn’t anything.   I had no symptoms at all. Still putting on weight ;)   On reflection I had a dull nagging pain lower right back in kidney region that seems to have gone now but when I mentioned that to surgeon she said pain would have been in upper abdomen - go figure ….
very best of luck for Saturday. Xx

  • Mine was ‘favoured to be low’ initially  but came back eventually as moderately differentiated.
low budding and a strong inflammatory reaction to the tumour ( significance unknown)  with lymphocytic infiltration present (pertumoural and crohn like) if anyone knows the significance of that pls let me know.   I think it’s good. I’ll find out Monday

been waiting with baited breath to hear how you are going.??

Its funny the hurdles they use to monitor you …. Bladder emptying, passing wind and the BIG one passing a stool.  Mine passed on day 4 so maybe Wednesday  for you ??  I had a couple of loose days ( 4x a day) then it’s stabilised at x1 or x2 a day.

my best advice to anyone else keep taking anti nausea medication  when offered to avoid nausea and vomiting !! They had me on I/V maxolon for 3-4 days.  .

hopefully you will be home soon….. my stomach felt like it had bricks in it for a few days but I went home day 5 and back to (non strenuous) work day 13 ( 8hrs each day on  the mon, wed  and Thursday)

you will bounce back too  xx

  • Sorry to ask .(unlike me ).As you know that my CD Scan Results  (1year)and It was normal.Does that mean I'm in  remission..I know I know I should have asked  .x Alaine

  • I’m not sure the exact definition of in remission. One would think so or prehaps NED. No evidence of disease ??
