Evening, here I am yet again reaching out for support and guidance. My mum is on her 1st of 5 cycles for stage 3 colorectal cancer. We are just coming to the end of week one of medication. Last night she had to go to A&E as spiked a temp of 37.7. Our local hospital, probably like so many up and down the country was overrun and we had a gruelling 3.5 hrs wait before they took bloods and finally gave her the IV antibiotics. Bloods came back ok apart from a CRP of 28. She was sent home at midnight on a 5 day course of oral co- amoxiclav . My question is she now has diarrhoea this could be the chemo or antibiotics. It just seems one thing after another at the moment, we are only on cycle one and have already had a trip to A&E. can I ask as the cycles go on do the symptoms get worse ?
Hi
It could be either but you could speak to her team just to get advice on how to manage it !
Or our helpline staff would be happy to guide you . 0808 808 0000.
I know antibiotics can be bad for that side effect too !
In terms of the accumulative effects of chemo , my mum had it over two years , six cycles at a time ! No two cycles were ever the same for her and she had a rough time at the beginning! She had a few hospital admissions but the middle cycles were actually her best ! Staying hydrated was her issue !
Chatting things through with her team gave them the opportunity to adapt things as required!
Send her our best wishes !

Totally understandable! It took us a few cycles to start getting a better routine and learn how to handle the side effects better !
That’s great her team are phoning and being attentive!
With the right support she will get there for sure !
I really hope you get some sleep tonight ! She needs you well too ! But I understand and I think my anxiety levels were sky high the first year !
Take care ,
