Hello All

You may remember me posting awhile back about my mother who had been diagnosed with bowel cancer which had spread to the liver.

The chemo course she was offered was fairly encouraging  - 3 months of a 'mild' chemo and if no success then they were going to try a more potent course. Everything went completely wrong though after the first dose. After 2 days she was admitted to hospital with a high temperature. What I have been told has happened is that the chemo had reacted with 'gut bacteria' and caused an infection of the bowel. What initially we thought might be a few days in hospital turned into two weeks which included a period of fasting.  She was discharged on friday but is now back in hospital with another high temperature. She is weak, confused and seems to have undergone a complete personality change  - I suspect there is a urine/bladder infection somewhere in the mix.

Before chemo - despite struggling with digestion and diarreah  - she was fit and walking 2 miles a day. Now she is confined to a hospital bed. What on earth has happened? I feel completely helpless and in the dark. I haven't even managed to find out which type of chemo she has been given ..info which i know would be useful to have been able to share. Last wednesday I visited her in hospital and was shocked.. yet the doctors said she was improving and subsequently discharged her two days later.

Has anyone else had experience of this? Is there anything that could give us some hope? I feel if things don't improve we could lose her very soon. I'm now wishing she'd never had the chemo ....but it was never painted to us that this was a last gasp attempt  - the doctors were very confident about it as a longer term course... not curing the cancer but at least prolonging life. Now it appears her life will be even shorter than if nothing was done, .

Thanks for reading and in advance for any advice

  • Hi

So sorry to hear about your mum ! If it’s any encouragement to you my mum was taken off to hospital  after a chemo cycle ! She was unable to stand , completely disoriented etc and I remember standing crying in the driveway! I was not even comforted that much seeing her later on in hospital but with time they did get her in a better position. Her electrolytes has been knocked off and potassium dropped . I did not realise it could do so much harm ! It took time to keep On an. Even keel ! Might be worthwhile check if she has an infection or if her electrolytes are ok !

You might like to chat it through with our helpline staff as they could assist with the clinical aspects of infections !

    0808 808 0000!

The solution for my mum after a break was a reduced dose which did the trick ! But you want to make sure you know exactly what the problem was in the first place !

If you do Instagram Bowel babe has had a similar situation to your mum with her gut ! ( I think !)

Take care and send your mum our very best wishes !

    Hi Court

Thank you so much for the reply. I'm thankful to know that your mum went through what sounds like a very similar thing and got through it.  Yeah...its totally frightening  - I can;t believe how ill this has made her. I still can't get clear answers from the doctors about what is going on  - they mentioned sepsis yesterday. Infection has been talked about a few times

yes hopefully she can start again when they clear this... that's what we are hoping. thanks for the phone number and the instagram page.i'll investigate both

thank you for your advice and your best wishes - much appreciated

    Hi

an update to this is that they've now stopped the chemotherapy permanently as it has caused so much damage to the bowel.

no idea what to do next... whether to seek a second opinion privately? I feel I should try to do something before we all give up

    thanks

    Richard

  • So sorry to hear that . She has had one of the more sever reactions .

Please let her know we are sending our very best wishes and hope she recovers from the effects of this quickly !

Do you know the extent of her liver involvement? Might be worthwhile finding out how large the mets are and the location in the liver . Sometimes radio frequency ablation can be very effective but there is a criteria for it . However sometimes it’s important to know you looked into the options open to her !

Our helpline nurses would be happy to chat this question through with you and give you some insight !

    Take care ,

    Hi Court

Thanks for your kind words. I know that the mets are in different places in the liver  - spread out. I'm unsure to the size but I will find out

I will call the helpline nurses. I really feel we need a second opinion or to chat through next options rather than just accept the hospital's opinion that there is nothing that can be done.

    thanks

    Richard

  • I just realised I did not add the actual number !

I think there is a lot of benefit to hearing what another clinician would do ! Even if it’s the same it gives you peace of mind that you explored all options! However they may have a different approach!

Take care and send your mum lots of love and support from us !
