Is it very risky to wait?

I am waiting for the liver surgeon to join the next MDT meeting to look at my MRI scan (done last Sunday) and decide on treatment. He requested this scan after a CT scan in August showed 3 more possible secondaries had appeared. I was disappointed that he was not present at this week's MDT and therefore there will be a delay of 2 weeks until there is another meeting. What happens if he is not there the next time? There seems to have already been a long time lapse between the CT scan and alert.

I have dukes 3c bowel cancer, had an emergency hartmann's procedure in 2017 with a liver resection of solitary tumour in 2018 after chemo followed by another 'mop up' cycle of chemo (folfox both times).

I had another liver resection (solitary tumour) in June this year after which I requested chemo but was advised to wait and use chemo if needed - hold in store.

This is a difficult waiting game. I am very concerned that this could be aggressive. I have been in contact with the colorectal nurses who say that the images will be sent to the hospital department where the surgeon is based and the surgeon should be at the next MDT meeting at my local hospital on 9/11/21. I am worried that this does not seem to be 'set in stone' and need some reassurance.

  • Hi

I suspect the half term break is the issue this week or mid October! I think it will level out for you !

My mum had a smaller liver resection which was quite quick in coming through however the second one was bigger as they wanted wider margins to make sure the lurking microsatellite disease was eliminated! They asked for more scans as I think they like them up in theatre and need them recent ! It actually took near eight weeks to pull it altogether but once it was decided it was carried out the next week !

That’s the upper limit and longer than most but thought it would reassure you ! One thing I suspected the surgeon knows what room they have for manoeuvring around the tumours , especially if there is a larger section of viable unaffected liver they are possible very confident in their clinical judgement and timings !

Are you going to pursue a second opinion on the benefits of chemo ? My mum only every had it pre op . They made her do six cycles before each resection as her liver tumours were quite fast growing ! However her lung met was very slow growing over two years so she just had surgery with that !

You have had your fair share of resections . You have been through a lot ! Just to encourage you again that was the last of the disease in my mum’s liver and clear for ten years now . Like you she was fortunate it was contained in an area they could access !

    Take care ,

Thank you for the response. It’s very useful as am dreading sharing the news with family as it’s bad news but hackles will also rise (why didn’t they give chemo etc!) and il stop thinking morbidly until I know moreBlush
