I am T4a N2b M1 with metastases in lymph nodes, apparently nothin in main organs, liver, lungs, etc.

Am I lucky it's only lymphatic system at the moment, does that mean survival may be longer than if in organs, although no chance of ops to clear lymph nodes I've been told?

Thanks, just wondering about prognosis and time........?

  • Hi

I had a look to see if there was any research to answer your question but I can’t find anything concrete. I think your question might be ahead of the science! Or you need the right degree to interpret the language! However cancer not being in a major organ can only be a good thing and hopefully successful treatment will keep it that way ! In terms of treatment outcomes I honestly don’t know as some organs are operable so I guess that can be a factor too !

However no matter where cancer surfaces what is in my mind very important is your how you respond to treatment !

Whilst people highlight statistics for cancer that has spread it has actually doubled since my mum’s diagnosis and I hope the new aggressive approach will push that further !

I can absolutely assure you that when my mum was diagnosed that approach was rare !

I would urge people over and over again to get a specialist consultation with a surgeon etc . I rarely say that now . So I am hoping as stats are a rear view mirror that the hard work pays off !

The other factor , I don’t know if my mum’s travelled via her blood or lymphatic system ! Prior to surgery she did not have a pet scan , but her lymph nodes were reactionary and enlarged on the ct scan ! After treatment not one single alive cancer cell was found in her lymph nodes ! I wish I could go back and ask a bit more around that ! Was there evidence of dead cells!!! Who knows ! But I guess since it can travel in two different mechanisms it might not be a like for like comparison in terms of survival outcomes !

Not that I would really know ! The other factor that I think is pretty incredible. The lung surgeon explained my mum’s met seven years later was part of her original spread ! So her immune system must have found a way to contain it for years !

They are now looking at her original tumour to see if it contains a certain protein that her body identifies as a virus !

Hope your treatment shrinks those lymph nodes right off the scans !

  • Hi. My husbands cancer started in he's bowels during surgery they found cancer in 1 of 19 lymph nodes he had removed he was then told he was cancer free but would need mop up chemo, 3 cycles in he had a CT scan which showed cancer had returned to outside the bowel and into several para aortic lymph nodes he is now classed as palliative as he can't have surgery or chemotherapy but is currently on nivolumab immunotherapy we haven't been told a prognosis as they can t say due to him being on the immunotherapy we don't know if it will prolong things he has a scan in November to see how the treatment is going.

    Hi Hayley

Sorry to hear your husband appears to be in the same situation as me, how old is he and when was he first diagnosed, and whereabouts is he being treated?

I'm 19 months into treatment, 12 treatments of Cetuximab, and new 10 log Oxaliplatin, all very positive so far.

I have a CT scan end of November to check progress and hopefully a break from palliative treatment.

Was told 12 to 18 months but still here 25 months since diagnosis,Just had my 17th round. I feel good still doing everything for myself. I also have a ct scan in November . Do try to stay positive, and active, I walk and dance round the house like a fool. I am sending positive vibes and prays for your husbands good scan results. Man dancingHeart
