Hi,

Just had my stoma reversal. Would appreciate some advise on what to eat to avoid the erratic bowel movements. Also how long does it last?

  • Perhaps  can help? Sending a hug from me.

  • Hi  Yes it can be very erratic in the early days and can take a few months to settle down - in fact they say it can take up to 2 years. Try not to go mad by eating all the foods that you’ve avoided with your stoma - stick to the basics and introduce things gradually

I was told I would never go back to normal (as in pre cancer) but would get used to a new normal. I still had to use loperamide daily and I’m trying to cut those down now (4 years later) but things are a bit erratic again. I always wear something in my knickers just in case and have wipes and cream to hand in the bathroom. Would recommend practicing ‘holding it in’ if you get a sudden urge as sometimes that can be better than making a dash for it!

Things will improve over time and it might be worth keeping a food and poo diary although I never managed to get past a couple of days!

    Take care
