Please help

I've been losing a little blood for years from my backside, I had a colonoscopy 4 years ago which showed up that I had large haemorrhoids and told that it wasn't of much concern only if they started bleeding heavier.

In March this year the bleeding came more regular and heavier, so I see the Doctor who referred me to a consultant who examined me and told me I had a large group of haemorrhoids that must be removed as 2 years ago I was diagnosed with stage 1 bladder cancer which was removed and been clear since but he didn't want to take any chances.

Now since Saturday last week I've been bleeding very heavily to the point that the toilet is now bright red and it looks like a sprinkler has been set off inside the toilet full of blood. Also been passing clots on almost every visit to the toilet.

I called 111 on Sunday and was taken into hospital, 3 days later and 3 consultations with 3 different consultants which was cancelled 3 times in 3 days (which each time I was sent home and told to return the next morning) who all agreed that I would go for surgery, It was written in my Surgery Consent form that the haemorrhoids would be either banded or removed.

The op went ahead but when I was in recovery I was told that no action was taken other than I had a Flexi Sigmoidoscopy and nothing else was said, I asked if I could speak to someone but was told no one was available but all will be explained to me when I return as an out-patient in 8 weeks time.

I know the NHS is under pressure but they just seemed to want to get me up and out as soon as possible as no beds were available.

is this normal with haemorrhoids? should I be concerned? Should I return to the hospital as nothing has been done?

Many thanks for any help and advice you have to give.

Regards

Paul

  • Hi

So sorry to hear that . I did manage to read your first post and tried to reply but I think it probably got lost after that !

Our advice around here is very simple . You need to know the cause of your bleeding and have your full colon inspected with a colonoscopy! It was a lot of blood and I for one would want to know for sure it was coming from the piles !

Our helpline staff could guide you on how to move this forward but if you look at the Nice guidelines for colonoscopy referral you will see what criteria needs to be met and use that to facilitate your concerns !

Really sorry you are having to navigate this yourself !

Hi brozz1e I seen your post from court has I was suffering exactly the same has you I was wondering how your doing my name is winst8

  • . Hi Paul. Would it be worth getting in touch with your doctor again? They should have a copy of your discharge paper and there may be some more information on that? If the flexi sigmoidoscopy has shown up something that they’re not happy with then I would have thought that a full colonoscopy would be warranted. If there is any suspicion of bowel cancer then the ‘gold standard’ treatment is that a colonoscopy is performed within 2 weeks.

Hope you are able to get something sorted and please keep us updated

    Take care
