White Blood Count Low

Morning

Once again my husband’s blood count is too low for scheduled chemo. He’s got to give himself three more Filgrastin injections over the weekend to boost the levels and go in on Monday for more blood tests. Hopefully he can then have cycle 3 of 4.

He has stage 4 bowel cancer. So far treatment going ok, 2 cycles done.

My question is what can he do if anything to boost his white blood count levels, diet, more rest  or is just one of those things?

Thanks

  • Hi

That is so annoying for him ! I honestly don’t know the answer but our nurses on the helpline will probably have more information. 0808 808 0000.

It was my mum’s platelets that dropped . Even now they sit right on the boarder line and have been there since her treatment ! However sometimes there is no rhyme or reason . I noticed it had dropped and on the way to hospital thought I would prepare her that it probably would not go ahead that day ! It was the only time they decided to pop back up !

Maybe others will have more information.

    Take care ,

This has happened to me twice and the nurses told me there is absolutely nothing you can eat or take to improve your blood. It will just naturally improve on it's own. Try not to worry, this is a normal occurance during chemo. I've just had my 7th session out of 12.

    Hello Tweed,

I had low white blood cell count on a blood test,, just after my 6th cycle of oral chemo. I had to have an extra week off meds. I increased my daily intake of vitamin C and fresh fruit and veggies all of that week. I had my bloods done on Friday this week and got a call from oncologist saying bloods were slightly improve and I am good to start my 7th cycle as normal on Monday.

It is a very common side effect of chemotherapy, hoping things improve for your husband. Always try to get better answers from your nursing team if possible.

Take care all the best to you both
