Hi, I've had chronic neutropenia for many years and medics have never got to the bottom of why. This is causing problems with my chemotherapy (5FU - flouracil with folinic acid) - I've had two rounds so far, last week's round was cancelled: on Tuesday the count was too low 0.25, by Thursday it was too high. They give me filgrastim injections to take to boost my bone marrow to create more white cells, but they don't seem able yet to get the dose right. What's concerning is this appears to be new to the team, including the oncologist. Is having chronic neutropenia so rare?? I'd love to know if there's anyone else in the community who has chronic neutropenia and to hear of your experience with chemotherapy.

On another note, its been lovely to have this extra week off (one week on, one week off) and to feel 'well' again, but makes me wonder how I'm going to get through 12 x cycles!!

  • Sorry can't help with the neutropenia, but I had the same chemo, but low dose as mine was 30 weeks. Can they reduce the dose at all? Mine got lowered slightly twice, which helped. I did miss a couple of weeks due to low white cells, it just got added onto the end. I had treats at half way, and 2/3 and the end, which helped the mental battle. I did find the after affects cumulative though, and struggled towards the end. I just said to myself, that I'd do the next one. Each time! So I finally got to the end. It then took a few months to recover. So I wish you well on your journey. (((Hugs)))

  • Hi

That is interesting! I wonder if it’s a bit more complex than they are used to but like you I would have thought it was one department that would know how to handle it . Are they contacting the team that normally managed you chronic neutropenia?

My mum had a few extended weeks and once she got her head round it I actually think it did her the world of good and strengthened her to get to the end of the process .

    Take care ,
