Hi everyone
My mother age 64 has been diagnosed with T2 bowel cancer, it is very low to the point she feels like it will come out when she goes to bathroom.
She had a colonoscopy ( her third ) and had biopsy.
She has a liver and full body PET scan over next two weeks. As there were cysts looking things on lymph nodes and liver but doctor thinks they are cysts not cancer as there is no sign of spread in surrounding areas. Or could be where her body has fought cancer he said.
It has come as a huge shock to both her and our family.
She will have chemotherapy and radiation therapy. We are seeing the oncologist on Tuesday to find out well everything like treatment plan and details about her cancer.
Is there anything that has helped you during treatment, I'm looking for things to make her more comfortable and items that will help with pain and side effects etc.
She currently goes to the bathroom alot and has wind and on off diarrhea. She has started drinking protein shakes as she's lost alot of weight.
We will also be traveling 1 and a half hours each way to hospital for treatment. Is there anything that could make that easier? She's especially worried about needing the toilet on motorway. And having to potentially be on her own for the chemo days as you can't have anyone with you at hospital.
How did you receive your chemotherapy? I heard you can get it via a PICC line at home potentially.
Something that she is finding helpful during the very stressful waiting periods between scans and appointments, are lighting candles and incense sticks throughout the day. Might be helpful to others here!
Thank you for reading, any help greatly appreciated sorry for long post.
Hi . If your mum is having chemo and radiotherapy then it’s very likely that the chemo (capecitabine) will be in tablet form and taken mon-fri at home. The radiotherapy is to try and shrink the tumour and the chemo is a low dose and enhances the effect of the radiotherapy. She would then have a 6-8 week wait before scans while it continues to work.
It’s a long journey to the hospital for her isn’t it? Unfortunately chemoradiotherapy can cause diarrhoea so you could maybe look at getting some incontinence pads/pants just to be on the safe side? Unfortunately your dignity can take a bit of a bashing with bowel cancer but there’s no harm in taking extra precautions.
Perhaps you could put a little ‘beating bowel cancer’ hamper together for her with little treats in like a good book, ginger biscuits, nice candle, moisturing lotion*, prepare some ready meals for the freezer? * The nurses recommend Aveeno with Shea butter for hands and feet when having/taking chemo. The radiographers will give her a cream to use for the area being treated and possibly a body wash too.
I’ve attached a link to a booklet which is quite helpful for when you’re just starting out. Good tip about the candles - I’ve got a checkup coloniscopy tomorrow so I’ve just lit a nice candle to cheer me up

Please ask if there’s anything else you’d like to know
Take care
