Waiting times

Hi everyone,  I have posted once before on this site, but thought that I should start a new thread.

I have had my CT Scan and MRI Scan and yesterday the McMillian nurse at the hospital rang with the unwelcome news that the tumour in my rectosigmoid junction is a colon cancer which has already spread to my liver. She said I won't be having an operation,  but reassured me that it is "treatable ". She wouldn't stage the cancer and said that i have to meet the consultant first who will go through the scan results with me. This is happening on 8th June.

Myself and my husband cried most of yesterday. Today we are talking with our 23 year old (disabled) daughter and 9 year old son.

Devestated is a word that perhaps describes how I feel.

Thank you for reading my post.

I was wondering how long others had to wait to see specialists when 1st diagnosed.

Cancer was found on 13th May via a colonoscopy.  2 weeks later an MRI and CT confirmed spread. I am due to see a specialist on 8th June to talk through my scans and finally an oncologist on 17th June. I have no idea when treatment will start after that.

I only became symptomatic with bleed in my stools around 10 weeks ago. But for whatever reason I am now bleeding every time and feel so much more symptomatic.  I am concerned that time is of essence.

I would love to hear about your experiences with this. Thank you.

  • Hi Bluebell51, so sorry to read your post, it's a difficult time for sure. Thinking back to when my husband was diagnosed, the timings seem similar, it felt like a lot of waiting, and very anxious times. Once my husband had his meeting with the Oncologist, that's when the pace picked up, and his treatment started within 2 weeks.

For us once we knew what the plan was things were a little easier, we had a path to follow. My husband had few symptoms and was diagnosed stage 4 with spread to liver and peritoneum, we were shell shocked. He was told not operable but treatable too. After 6 months of chemo, he's had some good results, and now he's on maintenance chemo so not such a tough regime.

Throughout his treatment he's had a positive mindset which has really helped, and we've found such help from this forum and the BCUK forum.

    Love Frances xx

  • Thank you for your reply Frances. I am pleased that your husband is doing well on maintenance chemotherapy.

You are right about the waiting seeming to be a longer period of time than it actually is.

I will try to take it one day at a time.

    From

    Nicola.
