Hi all,

I am having my second round of chemotherapy tomorrow, Folfox, and wanted to see if anyone had any experiences with having their chemotherapy pumps turned off at home after they've finished instead of going back to hospital after two days.

When I first met my chemotherapy nurse she was talking about the possibility to have the 5fu pump turned off at home by a nurse from a company they outsource this to. She mentioned it comes with pros and cons, as does everything, but one of the cons would be that you can't control what time the nurse shows up and that they often forget to bring one of the things that they are supposed to flush the portacath with - can't remember what it is but it's to prevent blood clots etc. So she was against it.

When I showed up for my first chemo the week after all the nurses were asking if I was set up to have the port removed at home. Which I'm not. They all seemed very confused by it and made it seem like it's unusual to come back to them to have it turned off. (They're all brilliant and super friendly so nothing bad).

This made me wonder if I should consider using this service or just leave it as it is. The big plus is that it would save my boyfriend a lot of money on the black cab journeys, but he says he doesn't mind it as long as I'm getting the treatment I need.

I'm at the HCA Private Care at Guy's Cancer Centre in London if anybody has had any experiences with them in regards to this.

Thank you and all the best,

Em x

  • Hi, the 5FU pumps through from body heat, so make sure it's taped close to your skin. Fingers crossed platelets are up next week, eat plenty of Papaya and drink papaya leaf tea, spinach, kale and avocado, made a big difference to hubby’s platelets. Love Frances xxx

  • Hi Frances,

Thank you so much for your tip, I love all those (can't ear kale because of my ileostomy at the moment but the others). Will see if I can send my boyfriend on a little shopping trip when he finishes work. He's was freaking out slightly yesterday not knowing what was going on. They did my bloods 3 times just to be sure (they did a manual count that took forever which showed they seemed to be clumped together but the results just didn't get better - they got worse as they were going on).

Hope your hubby is doing fine now :)

    Love, Em xx

Hi Em, 6 years ago when i first had 5fu pump I had to keep going back in to have pump disconnected and dressed/ flushed. Just started chemo again and things have improved so much. Bloods/covid test and treatment done in chemo centre but set up to have weekly picc line dressings and pump removal at home with district nursing team which helps enormously as I have no car and as neutrophils getting hit very hard each cycle public transport involving 2 bus journeys there and back would be a risk I dont wnt to take with covid.. District nursing is always really busy I know and it maybe it varies from place to place or it could be that district nurses are not availabe with particular trainig as I think was case in my are 6 years ago. Its made a huge difference as this time round I am finding 2 weekly cycles more challenging.

It is worth asking if you can have this done for you especially with the whole covid situation going on and it makes such a difference if youre feeling fatugued etc.

    Hope this helps

    Louise
