Hi All

Due to blood clots I am having to change my chemo regime.  Has anyone had any experience of Capecitabine tablet chemo.  I'm due to start next week after an 8 week break since my FOLFIRI was ceased and I wondered what to expect in the way of side effects.  I have the leaflet but wondered what other people had experienced.

Thanks in advance

  • Hi . I had capecitabine tablets alongside my radiotherapy and found them to be ok although it does tend to be a low doseage that is used under those circumstances. I’m going to tag  in as I seem to think that she had several months of capecitabine so may be able to share her experience?

Hi there, I am now on my 4th cycle of oral capecitabine, 8 tablets per day. All is going really well. On the second cycle I did experience dry, puffy, sore fingers which I spoke to my oncologists about and I had an extra week's break off the meds. Following that, my hand (it was just one hand) has really improved. I was issued then with a cream called Calmurid which helped the dryness. Also when washing up etc I bought some good gloves and try to wash my hands less. I'm 46 and have 2 young boys so I am always in the kitchen!

I am also issued with diarrohea medication and constipation meds, each time I receive my capecitabine. I have only ever used 2 of the constipation meds, and  my bowels have been working fine and my appetite is good too. I drink lots of water etc and lots of walking, around 10k steps per day,  I love my walks and I really think this helps me.

Wishing you all the best with your treatment, keep us posted and feel free to ask any questions happy to share my experience.

    • Hi there, I’m at end of cycle 1 and so far really okay , but tired , diarrhoea only very mild and not that bad , so far no nausea etc .. quite new to this game , to get 8 cycles .. no radiotherapy or anything, I know it can change each cycle so time will tell

Good to hear your cycle is going well so far. I was a bit anaemic on my last blood test and oncologist booked me in for a ct scan which I had yesterday so fingers crossed !! I feel great and am currently on my 4th cycle of capecitebane so I am praying my scan is clearPray I did have a very heavy  menstrual cycle during the same week my bloods were done, which my onc asked about, so hopefully it was down to that! Take care and all the best. PS, I found that grating some ginger into warm water helped me with a slight feeling of nausea. May work for you , may not, just what I found.

all the best with the change, hoping it goes well for you! I am on 4 in the morning, 4 in the evening 5oomg tablets. I also lost about 8 kg around operation months, down to 52 kg which is not ideal, I feel too thin!! I was 63 kg in November last year so I am trying to get back to at least 60kg. Whilst eating healthily too Grimacing rollercoaster indeed. I will know results in about 10 days and praying my phone does not ring with any hospital staff numbers before then!!

  • Thank you , only an extra 125 mg x 2 , yeah I was same  when I got out hospital, too thin , eating healthy on chemo isn’t easy lol , yeah that number appearing puts bp up ! All the best and keep us posted
