Hello everyone. My name is Paula but I'm on here very concerned about my daughter. She was diagnosed roughly a year ago with bowel cancer and was told that she was at stage 4 and she was inoperable so she has been receiving palliative care. Since then it has spread to her spine although her latest scan results were more positive. My daughter doesn't ask questions and has good as told me that she doesn't want to know much at all so I don't understand a lot of what is happening. But when I was at home with her recently she said that the nurse had ordered her end of life meds and pointed them out to me in the cupboard. Please please please help me understand what this means. Thank you

  • Hi

I am really sorry to hear your daughters situation. It is very hard on you .
If you like our staff on the Macmillan helpline have nurses who have a lot of experience in the end of life situations would be able to talk this through with you and offer you guidance and support. 0808 808 0000.

My own understanding of the situation is a tipping point occurs when the disease increases and more pain meds are required to assist in daily life . The patient may be complaining about pain levels etc . It could just be they are covering all eventualities but it sounds as though your daughter has been involved in the discussion.

But please phone our team as they have direct experience and can help you .

    Take care ,

  • I am very very sorry to hear this, my wife is a district nurse specialising in palliative and end of life care and im afraid it sounds like what my wife calls the just in case box, this generally holds sedatives and an emergency dose of pain relief.

It may be helpful for you to try and meet up with the nurse so she can explain things like syringe drivers and emergency meds, St Barnabas are also very good and their support and nurses tend to be more focused on end of life, again I am very very sorry to read and indeed write this, all the very best
