Hello everyone
Firstly about me, 46 male , diagnosed with Bladder Cancer Oct 2024 - T1 G3. Had a tumour removed Nov 24 and after a further TURBT found luckily not muscle invasive.
Had 13 doses of BCGs finishing in June 26. Now in the surveillance category, had two already and as yet no reoccurrence, and am currently No Active Disease (NAD).
Not sure if anyone here knows, the nurses at my local hospital are not certain how long this will continue for, I have been told two different theories
1. Camera every 3 months for 2 years, then told it would last 5 years, after that then a camera every 6 months for another 5 years.
2. Camera every 3 months for 5 years then every 6 months for the rest of my life, and this is due getting the diagnosis at a relatively "young" age. I was told only 2% get it around my age.
I found during my treatment my mental health was ok and manageable mostly using dark humour to mask it. However, I have found since my treatment has stopped all I do is constantly worry, every time I go to the loo I worry is it now I see blood again and it's back! I hate not knowing and waiting. It's like having the shadow of cancer following you around, waiting for it's optimum time to strike.
Am I worrying unnecessarily and need to slap myself silly? I find its destroying the family, as at times I can be a right miserable ha human when I am in one of my low moods - however I try to explain it to my family but they don't understand, get the standard response "don't think about it" which is easier said then done, esp when we have lost 2 family members since my diagnosis from cancer and a number of friends or work colleagues so it is very real.
Has anyone has the same feelings / experiences and come through it, or has words of wisdom.
Sorry for quite a negative Hello group, I am in a low mood week this week.
Thanks for reading if you are still here.
Mat
Welcome to the group. Good to hear that you are clear after your BCG therapy. I think option 1 is the usual, provided no recurrences pop up. Perhaps your consultant thinks 2 more appropriate, or it may end up somewhere between the two!
It's very natural to be worrying about recurrences. Hopefully, as time goes on, the thoughts will crop up less often. Others may have better ideas, but really you just need to try and distract yourself with other things to keep your mind occupied. Some suggest techniques like accept the thought, maybe write it down and then stow it somewhere. Have you accessed any cancer support services locally? They may be able to help too. Best wishes.
Hi,Welcome to the group.I think everyone here understands how you feel.It is hard to switch your mind off worryng about recurrences.Hopefully it will get easier with time.Distractions do help and you can post here anytime as this is a supportive group.Best wishes Jane
Hi Jane thank you for the reply.
I definitely think I need to distract myself more, work is a good distraction then I have come home that's where it happens. But your are correct it's good to have the support of the group and from people that have been through them same and understand.
Hi Mango26 and a welcome from me. Just to add to the above. This is a very understanding group. Many of us have gone through the some of the same emotions. The beauty of this place is you can come here and offload any dark thoughts, join in with any other discussions, or just come for a general chat. Best wishes.
