Cystoscopy and biopsy after BCG inductive therapy

I was wondering, how many times do I have to go for cystoscopy and biopsy of bladder after the six week BCG inductive therapy. I am glad to say my second TURBT did not find any tumour. It was just acute inflammation and ulceration due probably to the double J stent that I had first time. I am at the moment, normal urologically speaking, apart from some burning on initiation of micturition [probably due the effect of the large catheter].

  • Hi Madmax. Following treatment they have to let the bladder recover before a follow up cystoscopy. Usually six weeks or more. I had a different treatment to you but had flexible cystoscopies every 3 months for 2 years. Then moved to 6 monthly and now on annual. Those who have had BCG may give you something more accurate. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hi Madmax,

I've had 18 BCGs and 8 biopsies. Basically a biopsy nearly every 3 month's and then moving to 6 Months after two years or so.

I had biopsies each time, rather than flexible cystoscopies, which meant being knocked out.

I'm really unsure why I didn't just have flex's, but I do what I'm told.

My next biopsy is due February and then again in August, after that it will be annual check ups all being well.

    Wishing you all the best.

  • I asked my CNS and she said that flexible cystoscopy is a waste of time, because due to BCG, bladder wall is thickened and inner wall has nodularity [lumpy], making it impossible to distinguish from cancer. Biopsy is therefore essential, it seems and the biopsies on flexible cystoscopies are so small as to be useless.
