Hi ,
im a 51 year old, non smoking female . I had sex last weekend after a period of inactivity for well over a year . Couple of days later I started feeling like I needed to pee then pee some more . I was prescribed nitrofuriton but not asked for urine sample . I finished 3 day course then one day later started getting symptoms again and this time blood after wiping when passed some urine . Doctor put me on trimethoprim and asked for sample .I've not been asked to hand in another sample as labelling was wrong on the original one and therefore wasn't tested. Ive been on trimethoprim for two full 2.5 days now .will next test be accurate ? Im really really worried it's bladder cancer symptoms. Can anyone help ? I suffer really bad with anxiety.
thank you
Hi LFT and welcome to the group. It is understandable you are feeling anxious as it is the not knowing which causes the stress. Blood in urine is a symptom of bladder cancer as you know but can be caused by many other things. Whatever it is, blood in pee needs to be investigated further, especially if no infection is detected. If your sample is lab tested, it should be able to detect haematuria (blood). If you continue to see blood and your sample confirms it, you need to insist on further tests, usually a referral to urology. Very early days yet, but if it does turn out to be bc, then it can be treated successfully and the earlier caught the better. I hope it turns out to be something or nothing for you. Keep us posted. Best wishes.
Hi LFT. Without trying to raise your anxiety, NICE guidelines state that anyone presenting blood in urine with no evidence of infection should be referred within 2 weeks, although we know there may be a bit of a backlog. Again, be aware it can be caused by other things. Hopefully some of our lady members should be along to help with their experiences. Best wishes.
