I will be having my bladder removed on the 1st of September I am so anxious and worried about everything. I’m finding it difficult to stop crying I have lots of help from the urology nurses but still I am absolutely dreading Thursday it suddenly hit me today that this is actually going to happen.
Hi,
I did have a bit of constipation, which cleared after about three days after I got home. I was given laxatives by the Doctors.
I really didn't have any pain, although I was given painkillers and your usually kept on an intravenous drip while is hospital.
Diet while in hospital and at home was normal, although I seem to remember having certain foods recommended. Gentle exercise, particularly walking is recomended, but don't over do it, it's all too easy due to being a bit euphoric when you get home. Try to take a nap in the afternoons.
I was up and out of bed the first day after the op (just short walks around the wards), which is normal and your advised to sip water and chew gum to get your bowels working.
I was in for exactly 7 days, but don't distressed if it's a little longer, each case is different.
Hi Ronnie,The bowels can play up after this surgery. You will be put on a low fibre diet for a while after the op while the bowels recover. You need to avoid being constipated but there are things to try to prevent this. Some people get diarrhoea but I think constipation tends to be commoner. My surgeon said the bowels don’t like being handled and they tend to go on strike and stop working. Not everyone gets bowel complications though.Best wishes Jane
Regarding pain afterwards you will be offered plenty of pain relief if needed.I wasn’t in a great amount of pain.Morphine made me really sick so I just stuck to paracetamol and managed well with that.I had drips for strong antibiotics and paracetamol to start with.
The doc said 7-10 days maybe it will be longer than you because of my age. I love my food and i do have a low fiber diet as i have divicular and have drinks every day to make me go normal. So i dont know if i will have to take them when i get home. Thanks for all your answers very usefull thats if i do get the op ?
Regards from Ronnie
