Hi all,
I'm not a big drinker a pint or two a week. However since my diagnosis (end November) I've not touched any alcohol, including during Christmas etc.
I've had two TURBT operations since and I'm currently two weeks in from my last operation.
I do enjoy meeting a work colleague for lunch and used to have the one pint of bitter or IPA.
I know this isn't the most important thing going on in my life ATM, but I'm wondering if a pint will do any damage after say 4weeks?
I've googled it and I'm still confused.
If I can't it's not a massive deal, but I no longer drink many soft drinks other than water.
Would wine be better than beer? Or should I just avoid it completely?
Any thoughts greatly appreciated.
Kindest Regards.
Hello BFG, I avoid all alcohol and carbonated drinks not so much as a result of TURBTs but since my BCG instillations. It left my bladder inflamed and causes me pain and discomfort to this day. Water is my friend along with lemon barley water. Sounds boring I know but I did enjoy a pint and a glass of wine but it makes me suffer. Hopefully over time I can get back to how it used to be. It really is down to the individual, you'll know what your body can tolerate.
Many thanks, I haven't started my BCG treatment yet. I'm seeing my Doctor tomorrow to discuss what is going to happen next.
I've also given up all sodas, but I do miss a pint. I drink so much water I think I'm just longing for something else.
Sorry to hear that it makes you suffer and like you said maybe one day in the not so distant future.
Thanks again for replying and for taking the time to explain your experience.
Hi BFG . That's one of the first things I asked my urologist. He said a couple of pints should do no harm. He advised only drinking real ale and avoiding lager and other fizzy mass produced stuff that may contain chemicals. Just off for a couple now. Best wishes.
Thanks Rily, that's good to know. I was going to wait for 4 week's to pass since my operation.
I'm not a fan of fizzy lagers, so that won't be an issue. I also like a Guinness occasionally.
I was just worried about stretching the bladder and if alcohol would be an issue.
Enjoy your drink and many thanks for taking the time to respond.
Hi BFG, I was able to have wine at times during the three and a half years I got BCG. I didn’t drink on the day I got a dose and I didn’t drink at all during the first 6 weekly induction doses. But in the treatment “holiday” periods I found I could drink moderately. I did however find it important to balance alcohollic drinks with plenty of water to maintain good hydration,
Hi herothedog,
Thanks for your input. I must admit I'm a tad anxious about having BCG. I guess I will find out tomorrow what happens next for me.
Although it's good to know a glass of wine during treatment is ok. I think I've drunk more water in the last 4 months than I did for the entire year.
Thanks again for your message, it's good to hear other people's experiences and advice.
Kindest regards.
