Hi all, new to this but I would like to know if anyone has had cancer diagnosed in both bladder & prostate and had the bladder successfully treated with BCG but cancer still present in prostate?  If so can the prostate then be removed surgically?

  • Hi  . I've no experience of this but let me welcome you to the group. I am sure someone will be along to help when they pick up your post. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Don’t know, but I had my bladder removed and they did the prostate at the same time as tests showed possibility of cancer. Both toast now, and I am cancer free.

  • Prostrates can be removed via TURP trans urethral resection of the prostate so it is certainly possible.

Other than that I can't really help any further with your question, but I'm sure there is other possible treatments for rumours in the prostate possibly.

As to having the prostrate removed in not that sure of the issues with that, other than potential erectile dysfunction and things that go along with that most likely like low libido etc.

  • I would like to know this too as my husband is in the same situation sadly

  • Really?   Hope someone can tell us the answer!!

  • Hi Lilbb,

Not had this personally but my sister-in-laws uncle, had prostate cancer before his bladder cancer diagnosis.

He started on the BCG treatment and I'm 90% sure he had his prostrate removed whilst on the BCG course. Unfortunately I don't really see him that often, but I'm convinced he did have his prostrate removed after BCG and he still has his bladder, with clear results.

Wish I could be 100% sure, but I can't really say for certain.

  • Thanks Trevor, that is good to know!  We will have to ask some questions on my husband's next BCG appointment.   Obviously it will depend upon the effectiveness of the BCG treatment on his bladder but all our fingers are crossed! Lee

  • Hi Lee

How is the cancer in your husbands prostate currently being treated? Is he on hormone therapy?

  • He was advised to have a cystectomy but he just couldn't go through with it.  He asked to try BCG even though his consultant said it probably wouldn't work.  He has had one treatment of BCG so far.  The plan is for 6 treatments and then take a look and some biopsies to see if it has worked.  We are aware that the BCG may not have too much affect on the prostate cancer so we were wondering if prostate removal might be an option if the BCG works on the bladder but not the prostate?  I guess we need to ask that exact question to the consultant?
