Underwent my second TURBT on Sept. 11. No pathology report yet.
Four about four or five days post-op, there was a very light amount of blood in urine, so I was pleased.
Approx post-surgery Day 6, I think I lifted a bit too much in terms of plastic grocery bags, as I felt a twinge. Immediately set 'em back into the car and lightened the load per trip into the house, of course.
But, that night, blood in urine was noticeably heavier ... although all clots were quite small. Urine then improved and went "pink lemonade" color for a couple days, with clots staying on the small side.
Now, on post-surgery Day 10, I just took one pee that was quite red and included one clot that was on the big side. In fact, had a slightly hard time passing that one.
I'm a little worried, but maybe I should lighten up a touch, considering it's only 10 days past the surgery date. And I did have to go back on my blood thinners (heart doc wasn't going to let me put those on hold for more than 5 days post-surgery.)
I also wonder if sitting too much at work plays a role.
In general, I actually feel good, any pain just above the plumbing has been very minor.
This being Friday evening here, I guess I'll just go to the emergency department if the clots make passing urine difficult this weekend. Otherwise, if the blood stays quite red, I'll call my urologist on Monday.
Any thoughts? Am I over-worrying this?
Well, bit of a bummer.
Drove to my urologists office, and they got me right in and did manual irrigation. Doc warned me it might work, might not ... that sometimes you have to get the continuous irrigation and/or wear a catheter for a couple days.
Good result at the urologist's office ... left peeing clot free and only pale pink. Made the hour-long drive to my home city and workplace ... and immediately had a tough-start on the first pee and ejected a big clot.
Same result on second pee.
So, either I'll get lucky and get these out ... or it will be another clean-out, probably with a catheter to follow.
Monitoring it closely, of course. Not much else to be done.
Thanks for all your help; I greatly appreciate it.
Hi MarkinUS
So sorry to hear that you still have problems. Your bladder will heal given time, you are just very unfortunate to be passing clots. Keep drinking lots to keep your bladder flushed out. If you can get hold of Barley Water it does seem to soothe a sore bladder. Fingers crossed that it settles very soon.
Sending a hug to the US to you.
Love Ade xx
Hello MarkinUS. I experienced symptoms similar to yours in my early phases of this cancer thing back in 2017/18. Irrigation is often effective but, like you, my relief from clots etc was only temporary even after several days in hospital with a continuous irrigation set up via a three way catheter. A second TURBT was the eventual fix, then after trying me without a catheter for a few days, it was found that natural expansion and contraction of the bladder caused bleeding to develop again. I've therefore had a foley urethral catheter since late 2018 which, although not wonderful, does seem to reduce the tendency to bleed. I sincerely hope your medical team finds a satisfactory solution in your case. Clots and bleeding are no fun and quite alarming. Best wishes for a good outcome.
Well, was retaining this morning (Tuesday) and after quite a bit of time and effort -- and some luck - -finally was able to urinate. It was plentiful, blood red and included about four of the biggest clots I've ever seen.
I was bummed, but thought it best to face the music and probably end up with a Foley catheter for a few days, so I called the urologists' office and gave 'em the details.
They said come on in (again). My own doctor was booked up with patients, but a very nice pair -- a nurse and a physician's assistant -- took care of me. Initial thought was I might indeed need a Foley for few days, at least.
However, they irrigated me and got good volume, good color (only a little pink) and zero clots! They then had me stay until I could pass on my own. I did, and it was light pink and clot free.
They consulted with my MD and said their informed opinion was that I perhaps cleared the worst of my clots during that first and epic pee this morning. With some rest, plentiful hydration and holding off taking my blood thinners (cardiologist prescribed) for a few days, I might be on the way to healing up properly.
It's been about three or four hours and I've actually peed a few times (two of 'em just smallish) ... but the first was only pink and the latter two have been nearly clear!
(Funny how this game works ... a clear pee can make you so happy,)
So, I'm taking a full day off work just to make sure I rest.
And while there are no guarantees, I'm hoping this holds. If not and the problem remains solely clotting, they think it still might resolve in a relatively short time. And, of course, they want this cleared up before they start my induction course of BCG.
They even said they might teach me how to self-catheterize and irrigate, which -- to be frank -- sort of scares the living heck out of me, But if I have to learn, I have to learn.
Been an odd couple of mornings, but grateful for the care I'm getting.
Thank you, all, for letting me share & vent!
Hello Mark, it sounds like you are having a really hard time at the moment. I hope things improve quickly for you. I know my symptoms were different to yours but after my chemo radiotherapy I was given aTransurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) which helps to keep the urethra (water pipe) clear. To maintain a clear urethra I have to Self-Catherise twice weekly. It sounds so daunting but believe me it is so easy and takes only a few minutes per week. I am on Catheter number 171 now. Fingers crossed everything works out well for you. Garviv

Hello all, and thank you all for your kindness and good information.
After my urologist visit yesterday (Tuesday), the afternoon went very well. Was passing the rest of the day with almost no red at all.
This morning (Wednesday), my first of the day had a bit of blood in it, but no clots, and my second had a bit of blood in it with only a few small and easily passable clots. I've since cleared up nicely so far today.
So, I'm hoping for a good day. Hydrating well and using the bathroom frequently.
I appreciate you all very much. I know I haven't been through but a mere fraction of what many of you have, but the first time you literally can't go to the bathroom ... that makes a person nervous! Thanks so much for being patient and informative.
If I continue to heal well, my induction course of BCG is to start in about six weeks.
I've been quite fortunate, and I am glad I ended up with a large urology practice with an office an hour's drive from my home. They are able to get me in even when my own doctor is out or fully booked, and there's no urologist in my own town with that degree of staffing. They've also been kind and professional.
Thanks for being there, my Macmillan friends!
An update: The second irrigation at the urologist's office seemed to really help. I had one more difficult spell, but then the urine cleared up. Yellow and clot-free! It's been that way for a week now, and I'm trying to be mindful of any lifting and being sure to get decent rest.
Also, pain from the bladder is slight.
The only irritating symptom three weeks after TURBT No. 2 is some persistent irritation in the urethra right at the tip of the penis. I'll try a couple days of pyridium and see if that helps, as I understand from reading that this kind of irritation can be intermittent.
Thanks all for sharing. I appreciate the helpfulness and encouragement.
