Just wondering if others could share if it gets easier each time?
To be truthful I didn’t actually know I was having the camera where no camera should be going in an ideal world, so I didn’t have much choice and think not knowing made it easier.
But I’m sure like many others I struggled a lot just knowing what was happening, I think I was in my own little safe space for most of the insertion part, but did look at the monitor when they found the tumour. Quite strange looking at the inside of your own bladder and very surreal.
One of the 3 women was saying try to relax and wiggle it out your toes, which I can’t say really helped if I’m honest.
I was so tense and a little squirmy as soon as I felt the pressure of it being inserted. I don’t think it was painful but it was a bit of a blur as I was a rabbit caught in the headlights at that point.
I’m going to be having the flexible cystoscopy every 6 months for life apparently and just trying to work out how to deal with it each time, I guess being as relaxed as you can makes it easier but I don’t know how I can be relaxed during it?
Don’t get me wrong I got through it along with other unpleasant things like the rectal exam and I know people also go through much worse as well.
What I also know is I swore a fair bit and had to keep apologising to the nurses for swearing. And she said if you need to swear it's fine still made me feel bad though. Maybe something to clam the nervemight help like being drunk or something stronger

Hi
I opted to be knocked out for the rigid procedure! Surgeon recommended it and I didnt argue. I am 69 and never had surgery before which surprised the surgeon....
When I came to I asked if I had been swearing and nurse said no.
I felt fine after procedure and no pain. I did pee blood then drank over a littre of water until urine was clear. The blood was due to hving to push the rigid scope past prostate. Second op when they went into my bladder to r emove the stones was a bit more painful and had to have wound care. Disposable stitiches. Had a catheter for a week and it was removed without the pain I had with previous catheters..Before, .the stone granules attached on outside ot the catheter and it was painful on removal. None of that now. Surgeon never mentioned having to having any more scope treatment.
I think most of us on here will have experienced the delights of a flexible cystoscopy. Although we are all human, there can be significant differences from patient to patient (basically dimensions, existence or otherwise of tender inflamed areas, male/female and mental stress level). Operators also vary but I've yet to have an obviously 'bad' driver! I've only had 4 flexiscope sessions since 2017, the last one in 2022. As most have said, once you've had the first one, even if it was very unpleasant and painful as in my case, knowing what to expect does help a bit. It does not take long to carry out the procedure. Since 2018 I've had tens of urethral catheters inserted and removed, a permanent feature of my cancer care. These also typically cause me varying degrees of pain and some bleeding during extraction and insertion. My normal foley catheter (in-dwelling, urethral for up to 12 weeks) is a size 16CH. Most flexible cystoscopes are in the 16-17CH range but are not as pliable as an ordinary catheter. Having overcome (well, 95%!) a severe medical phobia which troubled me from 5 to 70 years old (now 74), I no longer fear the flexi but my consultant does try to route me to CT scans where there is a medical option. Just the weird effects of the intravenous 'dye' to endure with those.
Hi tthanks for reply
When I had catheters the nurses applied plenty instilagel and waited for it to work. I had endless UTIS and blockages.
Last year I asked nurse was out to my home for a blockage
Iasked iif I could try to pee without catheter, she agreed as a trial without catheter.
I could pee and did not need another catheter. It must have been the hormone treatment that shrank the prostate, I had to drink 2 glasses of water that day to make sure my bladder emptied and it did.
I also went for the pee in the bucket I call it at hospital and my bladder emptied fine.
.the bladder was scanned and there was litlle urine left and the nurse was happy with that. This was only a few weeks ago. They didnt want to see me back at that clinic.. Also had kidneys ultra sound scan and it was okay. This was a few weeks ago in hospital.
Just re reading this thread Trevor, and I'd just like to say I am now at the point where I just get my kecks off like it's normal now, I'm more worried about the thing being inserted than caring about any shred of dignity I had left all being gone now.
Even when I had the catheter removed in hospital and she said did I mind if some young guy watched who was in training, I made a slight moan about it and then when she you don't have to if you don't want, I just went yeah whatever fine.
I have no dignity or modesty left at all now still feels semin uncomfortable for a moment or 2 then I've only got one to be concerned about anymore
