TURBT

After having cyscostomy my sister was told briefly that she would be sent for an MRI 40miles from home on a very full bladder. To follow was TURBT Procedure which takes place 14th April as she hadn't heard the mri results she enquired at the hospital secretary informed her that the consultant had seen the scans but had no ordered any letter to be sent out to her so she shouldn't worry which understandably means nothing at this stage. Pre op check yesterday was fine though the nurse made it very clear that it had been requested by consultant that she be kept overnight.

This alonwith the discussion with the nurse about general anaesthetic verses epidural  on the day she came away feeling she was being persuaded to have an epidural so any experiences of both or either procedures would be helpful to put her at ease her fear level at this time is overwhelming  she recently lost her husband suddenly so this is a very emotional roller coaster just now

  • Hi  . The MRI scan is just part of the jigsaw and not usually discussed until all the relevant information is in. Once the results of the TURBT are  in an MDT (Multi Disciplinary Team) will get together to discuss results and then form a treatment plan. Most people have the procedure under GA, but others have an epidural if it seems GA is not appropriate. Overnight stays are also common so try not to read too much in to that. We know the early days of uncertainty and not knowing , along with the waiting can be very stressful. I hope all goes well.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hi

My father in law had a turbt under epidural due to an existing heart issue 3 weeks ago. As rily says, one type of anaesthetic might not be suitable for various reasons. He had a prostate biopsy at the same time, was kept in overnight and discharged the next morning. He did have a catheter placed after the procedure and is now waiting for results next week.

  • Hi sunshine forever

I had my first TURBT 3 weeks ago under GA

The worrying beforehand was much worst than the procedure

Woke up with a catheter, kept in overnight and went home the next morning

I also had an ultrasound and CT scan a few weeks before the TURBT

Please feel free to ask any questions, everyone is super friendly and helpful

    Love Tina x

  • Thank you so much I am showing my sister these responses to reassure her sadly the hospital she tends seem to lack in clear communication

Unfortunately after her first ultra sound she was told it was only a fibroid pressing on her bladder which she could deal with and they only seemed to take things seriously after the  cyscostomy when she complained of discomfort in her groin and numbness in her leg then then confirmed it actually  was "abnormal growth" resulting in the TUŔBT Procedure to come very overwhelming  so soon after a bereavement
