Immunotherapy after metastases spread - Pembrolizumab

Hi there

Does anyone on the forum have experience of Pembrolizumab?   My partner had a complete metabolic response after Gem-Cis to his advanced metastatic bladder cancer.  He then had 32 RT sessions.  Sadly, 4 months after RT, the metastases have returned in  same part of pelvic bone and lymph nodes and there are now some small nodules in lungs.

He is keen for immunotherapy and Pembrolizumab is being recommended.  Does anyone have experience of that - I know everyone responds differently to  these drugs but it would be helpful to hear from you.   And is it like chemo where you have to take a bagful  of other drugs in anticipation of side effects?

Thanks  so much for your advice.   And hope you are all doing OK out there.

  • Hi . No personal experience of Pembrolizumab (also known as Keytruda). Hopefully someone will be along with some information, but in the meantime, if you enter Pembrolizumab or Keytruda in the search bar at the top of the page, you will see there have been members in the past with some good results. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hello Swan173

A patient I know was on the trial for pembrolizumab. She had G3T2 bladder cancer and was booked in for RC. At the last scan before surgery, it was discovered that she had mets in her lungs, liver and hip bones. She was given up to two years to survive.

After the shock of that came the chance to join the pembro trial, not knowing if she was to have the drug or the placebo.

4 months after starting the trial, her scans showed no evidence of disease in her bladder, lungs and liver, only in her bones. She continued treatment for another 6 months and was declared completely free of cancer.

Two years on, she remains in good health and recognises that she was very fortunate and that not all patients have the same positive reaction.

    I hope yours is similar.

    CB.

I may appear to be listening but in my head I'm all at sea.

  • Thanks so much CB and Rily.  You are always so kind and helpful with your replies and it's really appreciated.  It'g good  to hear the positive story of  the patient you know - and fingers crossed that my partner tolerates Keytruda and  has a good response. He's starting next week and, while he knows the success percentage, he is feeling really positive.

Trying to just enjoy the fact that he's looking and feeling good at the moment.  He even managed some long country  motorbike rides recently!

Hope you are doing OK and thanks again for all the time you give the forum.
