Hi there, hello!
I'm starting my 28-day chemoradiation course in a week's time. Like many others here, I am trying to put myself in a good position to start and have been reading a lot about what to expect and how to prepare.
I've not had any conversations with a dietician or a dedicated key worker or nurse and, as time is getting tight, am trying to work through the foods I should be embracing. The low residue diet makes sense given the treatment, but I am a vegan and most of my protein has previously come from beans, pulses, legumes, etc. which are clearly off the menu. I'm just not sure how much tofu I can take!
I appreciate this is pretty niche (even for the anal cancer forum!) but thought I'd throw this into the question box to see if anyone else here has been through this pathway as a vegan and if there is any advice from those who have first-hand experience.
Reading other people's experiences has been really valuable. Thank you for making yourselves so visible. It is really appreciated.
Sending my best for peaceful evenings, all.
Hi Anustart I had no advice re diet when I was going through treatment other than eat what you fancy. I'm not vegan. I cut green veg at the beginning as I got really bad wind pain from day one. Most of the time I survived on cheese and marmite on toast as a lot of foods tasted weird. I would say to obviously try and eat as healthy as possible but see how foods taste and make you feel. As long as you are eating that's the main thing. Good luck with your treatment. Sending hugs. Xx
Hello Anustart
I can't help as I am not vegan but I hope some other members pick up on your post and can offer advice. I was so like Bungle1 in having very limited food choices and cheese on toast with mustard and onions was my go to for many weeks but I realise that cheese is off the menu.
Hope you get some help soon.
Irene xx
Hi Anustart ,
Firstly welcome to our little corner of the MacMillan Online Community although I’m sorry that you’ve had the need to find us.
I don’t have any experience of a vegan diet going through this treatment. I didn’t have major issues with my appetite during treatment, I ate a little less I suppose & I ate a mostly keto diet, I didn’t suffer with diarrhoea at all in fact I swung completely the opposite way & had to take stool softeners throughout. See how it goes & if you start experiencing any issues see if you can get some advice from your treating team.
Wishing you the best of luck with your treatment. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.
Nicola
