Hi Everyone,

What a lovely site this is, I came on as I had a few questions going round my head and all the info is already here thank you.

I have my planning scan tomorrow and treatment starts on 5th Jan eek! All a bit of a shock as the GP was convinced it was a fissure, so glad I pushed for a referral!

I’ve had some different opinions on hair loss and wondered if you could help, I’m having the IV chemoradiation for 28 days with the chemo on the first and last weeks of treatment.

Many thanks xx

  • Hi.. welcome to this wonderful forum...

Firstly so sorry your are going through this.. but your not alone.. we will help you through this..

I was worried about my hair.. but im nearly 12 months post treatment now and although its gone a bit thinner.. its not really noticeable..

I changed how I looked after my hair during treatment and fir a few month after.. I washed it only with baby shampoo..I didn't tie it up or use straighteners on it...and def no colour added until about 7 months after I had my highlights done..

Everyone is diffrent but fingers crossed you will be ok..

Good luck on starting your treatment x

  • I am going to be the odd man out here and say that I lost about 80% of my hair and am still struggling with hair regrowth nine months after treatment. That being said, I am in the States and had 5-FU plus two rounds of mitomycin. It seems like treatment is different in the UK, and it's very possible that the extra dose of mitomycin really affected my hair. Whatever the case, I hope you have minimal thinning!

If you do have hair loss and want to know what I went through, my dermatologist offered me minoxidil to facilitate regrowth, but I didn't wind up taking it because my hair is actually growing back (slowly) on its own. The weird part about it is that is growing back curly! I've always had straight hair and what little hair I had left is still straight, so my husband calls me the "hedge hog" because I have a mix of straight and curly hair and I have to clip my hair back so no one thinks I was electrocuted.

Anyway, sending you my best thoughts. It's a scary time to go through all this. I'm rooting for you. Xo

  • Hi Squeak,

Thank you for sharing your experience, that’s great advice. Sounds like it’s best to treat the hair gently and let it dry naturally so I will do that.

Counting down to starting on Monday, feeling a bit anxious now!

  • Hiya,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, interesting that it’s a slightly different regime states side.

It must be so strange that your hair has grown back curly! I guess I should expect the unexpected as we are all different!

Not too long until I start now, it’s a daunting thought but at least I know more about what to expect from this great forum.

  • Hi Lottie

Good luck for tomorrow. The first day is always the longest but once you start it's a good feeling of at last treatment is underway. Like others my hair didn't fall out I had 28 days of chemo radiotherapy. 1st day IV then oral chemo. I was told to expect some thinning of hair. I went to TKMaxx and bought castor oil shampoo as I read that was good for hair growth. I also bought their conditioner which again promoted hair growth. I don't know if it was that or I was lucky but my hair actually is fuller than ever! I am 4 months post treatment. I hope the treatment goes quickly for you

    Big hugs

    X

  • Hi Lottie,

Good luck for tomorrow, I am sure it'll be fine and you'll feel that things are much more organised and under control by the end of the day.

I would just say these first appointments can be long and tedious and involve a bit of waiting around, so make sure you have enough to occupy yourself, and some food and drinks. Oh, and make sure you have a full charge on your phone.

Keep us posted about how it all goes, we'll be thinking about you!

  • Hi Polly,

Awe thank you for thinking of me, I’m a bit nervous but I just want to get started now.

Great top hair tips too, that sounds like good stuff!
