That's just the beginning.  Found out I have Kidney stones.  I was supposed to start Pelvic Floor Therapy but I haven't even scheduled it yet.  This week both big toe nails are just hanging on and I'm terrified to pull off and even more afraid to tell anyone.  I had 2 spinal fusion surgeries prior to my Anal Cancer Diagnosis and can barely reach my feet.  I feel so disgusting and haven't been eating well since treatment ended. All I crave is sweets!  Shouldn't I want to be better?  Spending lots of sleepless nights crying.  What's wrong with me??? Help!

  • Aww bless you, it's sounds like you have been through a lot and so has your body and this will have both a physical and emotional impact on you and your recovery. It's great news that the cancer has gone but it could take a while for you to feel.better in yourself overall. As you get physically stronger you'll start to feel better in yourself emotionally.

You need to eat a healthy balanced diet for your body to receive the nutrients needed. Maybe just try small amounts of diet each day to try and build up your appetite more and drink plenty of fluids. If you're struggling you could be referred to a dietician to help with this.

It's easy to get in to a cycle. You're not sleeping so you feel crsp, you feel crap so can't eat, you have no energy so you feel worse which then has an emotional impact.

Try to have small snacks every few hours and plenty of rest and hopefully your body will get in to sync again and once you start eating and sleeping you'll start to feel better xxxxx

  • Hello JerzeyGirl

I am so sorry you are in such a bad place.  Another forum member said on here some time ago, I am cured but my head isn't which sums it up for a lot of us.  Plus the fact that you have some distressing symptoms as a result of treatment.  Have you thought about going to your GP?  It sounds very much as if you need a bit of extra support to help you through this, be it counselling or antidepressants.  And please tell him about your sleepless nights and crying too.  You have been through a lot, one way or another and it sounds as if everything has built up to the degree that you are finding it difficult to cope.

I lost nails too, but they are in reasonable condition now with no treatment, however you may need help getting them off.  I was just careful NOT to pull mine and eventually used nail clippers and scissors to detach the little bit that was still joined.  Your GP or treating team should also be able to help with the dry skin and vagina, please don't carry on suffering.  I don't know how long ago your treatment ended but things do get better over time.

I also suffered from depression and once that was treated was in a much better place to deal with all the other things that came along.  It isn't easy and can take time, but problems seem less insurmountable.  Sometimes taking that step to get treatment is the biggest and best you will take.

    Big hug

    Irene xx

  • Thank you so much for your great advice.  Tomorrow is a new day. I'm going to get me a new GP as soon as I wake up!

  • Hello Jerzeygirl,

Its great news about the cancer so congratulations on that.

You have a lot going on physically both now and with your spinal surgeries prior to the treatment. Don’t underestimate what you’ve been through. It’s a lot and it can feel really overwhelming to come out the other side, get good scan results and still feel awful with the side effects. Particularly when everyone thinks you’re now ok and back to normal when you’re anything but.

I think Irene has given some really good and sound advice, and I hope that you can get to your GP and get the extra support that you need and deserve right now. Not sleeping is awful and everything can start to feel like too much when you’re running on empty.

On another note, I have also had a toenail almost falling off and I hadn’t even connected that to the treatment so have learned something new.

I hope you get an appointment and that you have a good understanding GP.

    Big hug to you xx
